Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB

On the last page we looked at one of the highest specification mechanical drives on a 6GB/s interface, now it’s the turn of a high end SATA2 drive in the form of a Western Digital VelociRaptor.

This is the 300GB (279GB formatted) version of the VelociRaptor, a 150GB version is also available. The drive can be purchased with or without the large 3.5” black heatsink and for those who have a higher budget WD offer 600/450GB versions with a larger cache. This particular model uses 16MB of cache and runs at 10,000rpm and has latency of 3.0ms with Read/Write seek time advertised as 4.2/4.7ms.

In terms of manufacturer specific functionality the VelociRaptor uses Rotary Acceleration Feed Forward for optimised operation in vibration prone environments. Additionally it has NoTouch ramp load technology where the recording head never touches the disk media, ensuring both components suffer from less wear. This is one of the reasons for the drives 1.4m MTBF statistic and 5-Year Warranty.

With this essentially being a 2.5” drive the power use is significantly lower than 3.5” models, sitting at 6.08w when in operation. Shock tolerance is rated between 65 and 300G.

NOTE: The VelociRaptor is a drive which is included in Western Digitals Loyalty Program that allows consumers to upgrade to a higher capacity model at a discounted price (USA/Canada Only).
