AIW X800GT: Whats New - Hardware

When comparing the X800GT AIW to the recent X800XT AIW the obvious difference between the components used is the bus. The older model uses the AGP connector where as the GT uses PCI-Express which provides it with additional bandwidth.

If we delve a little deeper there are a few other changes.

Firstly the tuner has been updated from the MT2050 to the MT2121. The new tuner is a complete RF/amplifier silicon front end which communicates perfectly with all analogue and digital demodulators. The tuner has no manual tuning parts and receives and processes signals for FM, PAL/Secam and DVB-T. The part is not only designed to enhance the signal sent to the other components of the AIW due to its low phase noise, low noise figure and high linearity design, it is also designed to operate under very low power usage requirements. In fact the MT2121 only requires 1.5w for operation which, like the tuner in the X800XT is a power saving of approx 11% over other tuners.

The use of a low consumption tuner and PCI express allow the X800GT AIW to operate without any external power connector.

The second component change is the use of the NXT6000 technology in the GT design. The NXT6000 takes the DVB-T signal used by Digital Terrestrial broadcasts and transforms the signal to MPEG-2 which is used by PC’s. The NXT6000 OFDM Demodulator and FEC IC is designed to provide excellent quality in areas where signal quality isn’t great and fully supports all ETS 300 744 standards and NorDig Receiver Specifications, which define performance of terrestrial receiver products.

Another new addition to the GT bundle is the new remote wonder, Remote Wonder Plus. At the time of writing we hadn’t received our sample to compare to previous Remote Wonders. We’ll update the article when the sample arrives, in the interim here’s what ATI has to say about RW+

“ATI’s Remote Wonder Plus gives new reasons to fight for the remote control. This remote allows you to operate your PC mouse without being tied to your system by a cable. Remote Wonder Plus is simple to install and operates using radio frequencies (RF) that work from up to 60 feet away and even through walls. Enhance your multimedia experience with Remote Wonder Plus and enjoy the freedom to roam. Now you can use your creativity to dream up all kinds of new uses for your PC!“
