Corsair is a company whose name is synonymous with quality RAM, however they have slowly tried to diversify by creating water-cooling systems for enthusiasts (the highly acclaimed Nautilus). Today we are looking at another product in this expanded range, one of their new high quality power supply units, they offer two models in this range, the HX520W and the HX620W. We received the higher specification 620w unit for testing today, so let us see if it lives up to the high standards we associate with the Corsair brand name.

Packaging and bundle

The package of the HX620W is quite sturdy and well designed, inside the box, everything seems very well packed and the unit itself is engulfed by thick Styrofoam pieces, which make it nearly impossible to damage during transportation.

The bundle of a power supply unit is usually very small, but Corsair did place a few things in the package which add value. First of all, there are some black screws for mounting the power supply into your case. Although most cases are not painted at their rear, the black screws should still look good. There are also some black cable wraps for enhanced cable management and a pretty case badge complete with Corsair’s logo. Since this power supply unit is almost entirely modular with the only exception being the primary ATX/EPS and 12V power cables, there is a small bag which includes every cable which you can use. As a quick note, the HX620W is the first power supply to come into our labs with a total of 8 SATA power connectors.

The unit

This unit has broken away from the usual gaudy designs we have seen lately, in fact the HX620W is rather simple, that being a carefully painted black matt chassis which is extremely well finished. It is cooled by a single 12cm fan at its bottom which has a red sticker with Corsair’s logo on its engine. The entire back is perforated to allow the air to escape towards the rear of the case. There is a simple on/off switch at the rear of the chassis.

At the top of the unit you will find a sticker with thorough specifications for the model you bought. The paint of the unit is not reflective at all, not even to lights or the camera flash, it seems like it will absorb everything cast on it. At the rear of the unit there are 7 connector ports. There are 2 which are separated and are meant only for the PCI-E 12V power cables, while every other cable can go in any of the remaining 5 ports. The ATX/EPS and the 12V cables are permanently attached to the unit. They feature a black/red sleeving which matches the overall theme of the HX620W. The remainder of the cables are plain black with black connectors.

The interior

The 12cm fan which is cooling the HX620W is made by Adda. Adda is a well known manufacturer of high quality fans and their fans can be found in high class power supply units and expensive cases, like Lian-Li constructions. The interior of the HX620W is very tidy and everything is well placed to aid airflow. The black heatsinks do appear small for a unit of this wattage and class. However this is due to the efficiency of the unit, it generates negligible amounts of heat under low and medium loads. If the unit is pressed under heavy load, the fan speeds up considerably and creates a massive airflow which is more than enough in order to keep the unit operational. Unfortunately the unit will also become clearly audible, but that is true with most power supply units which we have tested in the last year. A small detail which is worth mentioning regarding the interior of the HX620W - every component which is close to the perforated rear of the unit has been insulated.
