Conclusion

It would seem after testing that the new Type-M units are copies of the Type-R units, merely missing the aesthetic additions and the small toolbox as packaging material. The voltage regulation circuit is still very good and although the efficiency of the unit appears to be slightly reduced, it still remains a very cool and quiet running PSU. The fan of the Type-M 4M630 unit will speed up considerably when the unit is reaching 100% load, proof that the efficiency of the unit is degrading and the unit warms up, which is something that Hiper could easily improve by installing better heatsinks. However it is doubtful that anybody would be using a PSU running at or near 100% load for extended periods of time, as it is almost certain that the PSU won’t last for long.

The build quality is rather good for a unit in this price range, it could be improved, however it would assuredly increase the manufacturing cost and ultimately the retail price of the unit as well. The 3 year warranty is rather reassuring though for those contemplating a purchase. The Type-M unit is designed to offer all of the performance a Type-R unit can deliver, but with subtle looks.

Taking everything into consideration and particularly because of the remarkable efficiency and thermal performance of the Type-M 4M630 unit it earns our DriverHeaven Shortlist Award.
