Performance/Testing
The games we will use to test will be Counter-Strike:
Source and Half Life 2. The main reason for choosing these
games are the variety of weapons with their very different
feels and characteristics. We will also be testing under
the 3 most common scenarios for mouse users: Normal desktop,
cheap average mousepad, and high end Icemat 2nd Edition
mousepad.
Test System:
AMD Barton 2500+ OC’d to 3200+
512MB Corsair XMS PC3200
Western Digital 100GB Hardrive with 8MB Cache
Sound Blaster Audigy 2
ATI AIW Radeon 9700 Pro
Connection: 3.0Mbit Downstream / 256Kbit Upstream Cable
Scenario 1 – The Desktop:
Everything was accurate but smoothness was an issue. I think
it had more to do with the fact my desk is a bit uneven
in its finish. The mouse didn’t have any reading errors
but since the desk wasn’t smooth acceleration was
off and caused inaccurate aiming that wasn’t the mouse’s
fault. This became a persistent problem with sniping as
the DPI was lowered for slower smoother aiming but I kept
missing the mark.
Scenario 2 – The Cheap
Mousepad: The mousepad was smooth and even but a bit resistant.
I could move faster on the desktop while the mousepad causes
slight friction with the cloth and therefore slows down
the mouse. After getting used to the slow acceleration I
was able to start mowing down people left and right with
the normal rifles, sniping was a bit different though. Since
the acceleration was slower the lower DPI made things too
slow and the higher DPI were still too fast so I had to
go and make a custom DPI to switch to, after that everything
went well.
Scenario 3 – Icemat
2nd Edition: I had to special order this mousepad for the
review to get the most out of this mouse. I won’t
say the mousepad drastically improved everything, but it
was problem free. The acceleration, accuracy, smoothness
handled perfectly well. I didn’t have any DPI problems
with the Icemat, although I’m sure if I spent some
time I could make some perfect DPI customizations for it.
