The performance of the ModXstream is good, but we cannot say that we found it extraordinary. The 12V lines are pretty strong, staying above specifications all of the time, the 3,3V line is right where it should be. The 5V line appears to be settling slightly low, but it certainly won’t be causing any stability or other problems as long as it’s above 4,6V. The voltage regulation circuit of the unit is ok, but it could be a lot better. Some of the 12V lines show a 2,5% variation when switching from mild to heavy load quickly while the 3,3V line goes up by as much as 8,5%. The variations do not worry us much, as it is natural for every unit to adjust itself to the load and voltage variations occur especially during very quick load changes. The ModXstream reacts easily to changes in the load and the voltage output is easily adjusted, even when the load changes are small.
The efficiency of the ModXstream unit is quite good. Typically staying above 82%, it can be considered top-notch by today’s standards. Technically, with the small heatsinks the unit needed the good efficiency in order to stay cool enough; a low efficiency unit could never output this kind of power which such small heatsinks. The 120mm fan of the unit is very good too; it is quiet when the unit is below 50% load and entirely silent below 30%. It does become audible and eventually loud at high loads, but it is going to stay quiet when you want it to. While you are drawing a lot of power from the unit you are either going to be gaming or working so you will not notice the noise in either case.
