Half Life 2 – Episode 1

Half-Life 2 Episode 1 is the first in a series of games that chronicle events after the end of Half-Life 2. The game engine is Valves “Source” however unlike the original Half-Life 2, Valve have added HDR lighting which works well with the existing engine to produce some great visuals.

Half-Life 2 allows us to see the difference that a 100mhz core increase and an additional 256mb of memory makes when compared to a stock 79GT. The difference in the maximum FPS at 1600x1600 with 4aa and 16AF is 7fps, this rises to 10fps when we disable 4xAA.

Comparing the Palit 7900GT Sonic 512Mb to the X1900GT 256mb also shows a good performance advantage in favour of the Nvidia based card. In fact the Palit card takes the 7900GT from being at a disadvantage to being the top mainstream card for Half-Life 2.
