The
Radeon X1K series of graphics cards allows the
option to enable video playback acceleration.
This feature enables the systems video playback
software to offload some of the decoding work
to the GPU and free up CPU time for other tasks.
Below are the improvements gained from enabling
GPU acceleration when watching an H.264 movie
clip (1080).

For
the first time in our tests we can see a big difference
in performance between the two cards. Enabling
video acceleration on both card caused a similar
drop in CPU usage (11% and 15%). The interesting
thing is that the CPU usage was a lot higher when
the AGP card was being used. It looks like the
AGP bus was finally pushed to it's limit and the
CPU was performing additional cycles for the same
end result.
