Video Playback

The Radeon X1K series of graphics cards allows the option to enable video playback acceleration. This feature enables the systems video playback software to offload some of the decoding work to the GPU and free up CPU time for other tasks. Below are the improvements gained from enabling GPU acceleration when watching an H.264 movie clip (1080).

For the first time in our tests we can see a big difference in performance between the two cards. Enabling video acceleration on both card caused a similar drop in CPU usage (11% and 15%). The interesting thing is that the CPU usage was a lot higher when the AGP card was being used. It looks like the AGP bus was finally pushed to it's limit and the CPU was performing additional cycles for the same end result.
