Overclocking

Overclocking a passively cooled card is no the smartest idea in the world, but we still decided to go for it. Since this is a pro series card there is no Overdrive tab in the CCC, so we used ATI Tray Tools to do the dirty work. Being confident we raised the GPU speed all the way to 620Mhz (26Mhz over the default) and the memory to 710Mhz (17Mhz over the default). We managed to find the perfect clocks with our first attempt, as raising either the GPU or memory speeds higher resulted in artifacting and crashes.

Both games display a similar increase in performance, which in this case helps quite a bit. While 2 fps is almost unnoticeable when a game is running at 60 frames per second it is a welcome increase when we are dealing with framerates below 20fps. Let’s be fair though – no one will buy a passively cooled graphics card for its overclocking potential.
