Conclusion

Pros
The Vantec EZ-SWAP EX is an attractive unit and has an appeal directed at those who need to carry a large amount of data from place to place without having to carry a laptop/notebook computer along with them.  The USB connection makes it very useful in this regard.

The support for USB 2.0 allows for significant speeds when moving data around.

Stability with the USB connection is solid.

Cons
One negative is the need for two separate USB connectors: One for Communication; the other for Power.  Should someone be using a laptop/notebook that has only one USB connection, they’ll need to also acquire a USB HUB so that multiple connections can be made (and even then they are risking that one USB port won’t be enough to power all the connections).

Also, the enclosure does allow the HDD to build up additional heat when in constant use.  Better ventilation/Heat dissipation may be something for Vantec to consider in future revisions.

Finally, can someone please print a manual that can be read easily without using a magnifying glass?

Recommendation
It’s quite possible that the VANTEC EZ SWAP EX will work flawlessly for many users.  I can only wish I hadn’t encountered so many issues with the two test units here.  Due to these problems, I can only give this unit a SHORT LIST recommendation.  It has a lot of promise and when working as intended it is a very handy piece of hardware.
