Revoltec have a long list of products, ranging from mouse pads to computer cases and power supply unit. They also offer many external drive enclosure products. Today we will have a look at their new line of enclosures, the File Protector. The File Protector enclosures range from 3.5” IDE drive enclosures down to 1.8” Hitachi drive enclosures. But the big selling point about the File Protector is that special backup software is bundled with them, which in theory should result in no lost files should a main hard drive unexpectedly die.

File Protector 3.5” enclosure

The 3.5” version of the File protector comes in a sturdy, well designed box. Inside the package you will find everything that you will need in order to get it working. There are two manuals, one with the File Protector installation instructions and information, and another with information concerning the Backup4All software. The Backup4All software CD is obviously included. Finally, there is a USB cable which you will need in order to connect the File Protector to your computer, and an AC Power adapter which the 3.5” requires as a power source. Unfortunately 3.5” drives consume too much power for an USB port to feed them.

The File protector is almost entirely made out of brushed aluminium, with only the rear part being made out of plastic. It is very lightweight and smooth to the touch. At the rear of the enclosure you can find an on/off switch, the USB and power connectors and a few ventilation holes. The installation of a drive is easy, you only have to pull the rear of the enclosure out, put the drive in place and then put it back in the enclosure. You are only going to need a small screwdriver, everything else is included. It comes in brushed aluminium silver colour or an anodized aluminium black colour.

File Protector 2.5” enclosure

The 2.5” version of the File Protector also comes in brushed aluminium silver or anodized aluminium black colour, and we received both. The difference on the packaging is obvious; the package illustrates the colour of the File Protector which is inside it. There is absolutely no difference between their bundled items. Much like the 3.5” enclosure, there are two manuals, one with data concerning the File Protector enclosure and an operation manual for the Backup4All software. The Backup4All software CD is also included of course. There are two cables, an USB data cable and another USB power cable, which is used to support the power feed to the device via a second USB port. There is also a small screwdriver to help you during the installation, as the 2.5” File Protectors are using smaller screws than normal. Finally, there is a small leather carrying pouch.

The 2.5” File Protector enclosures look much alike the 3.5” version of the unit, but they are much smaller and lighter as well. They are also made out of aluminium, with only the back being plastic. There are no switches or anything else at the rear, only the data and power cable connectors. The installation of a drive inside the File Protector is fairly easy, you only have to open the File Protector by pulling the rear part out, install the drive (no screws are necessary) and then place the drive inside the enclosure. Finally with the aid of the included screwdriver you have to secure the enclosure with a screw at each side.

File Protector 1.8” enclosure

The smallest of the File Protector series is the 1.8” Hitachi drive enclosure, this model comes only in black and can support the tiny Hitachi 1.8” drives and the bundle is much alike the 2.5” version. There are two manuals, one with data concerning the File Protector enclosure and an operation manual for the Backup4All software. There are two cables, an USB data cable and another USB power cable, which is used to support the power feed to the device via a second USB port. There is also a small screwdriver to help you with during the installation, as the 2.5” File Protectors are using smaller screws than normal. Finally, there is a small leather carrying pouch.

The 1.8” version of the File Protector can be described in one word; tiny. It is smaller than the size of a standard CD and weights almost as much as a CD Jewel case. There is no silver version of the 1.8” File Protector yet; it comes only in black. It is designed to transform a small, but also very expensive 1.8” Hitachi drive to an external USB 2.0 drive. It makes a very small and convenient portable storage and backup solution, but it can be very costly due to the current price of the 1.8” drives.

Now let's take a look at the operation and performance..
