DH Review: Revoltec File Protector |
 |
|
 |
Operation, software and performance
ll of the versions of the File Protector series feature a large blue LED on the top. The LED is almost as large as an eyeball. As you can pretty much imagine, the LED glows each time the drive is accessed. The LED light is very soft and easy on the eyes though, unlike most LED lights which feel like they are going to pierce through your eyes if you make the mistake and place them in front of you.
Since every version of the File Protector is USB 2.0 compliant, their performance is almost entirely dependent on the drive that is installed inside them. Of course if you have an older PC which supports only USB 1.1, the File Protector will work but performance will suffer. Above you can see a few benchmarks which we took by installing a Hitachi Travelstar 80GB 2.5” 4200RPM drive inside the File Protector. The performance is very similar to that of a similar 2.5” drive working inside a laptop.
Inside the package of every File Protector, you will find a copy of the Backup4All software. The Backup4All software is very thorough while being very easy and convenient to use. It has many options and possibilities, keeps track of data changes and statistics and many more. You can also setup scheduled backups with it, something very handy for offices and companies which require frequent backups of their data, where a loss could prove catastrophic.
Revoltec also sells a 3.5” transport bag as an extra. The bag is cheap but very durable and is especially designed to carry a 3.5” enclosure along with its charger and cables. Nevertheless, we also found the bag very convenient for transporting our notebook peripherals around as it has good and variable spaces.
Final words and conclusion
What we did like: The quality and appearance of the File Protector series is very good, the brushed aluminium and lightweight design provides an excellent feel. For their price range, the included backup software is a big plus as well. Finally, the included leather bags for the 2.5” and 1.8” versions are an additional bonus.
What we did not like: Unfortunately, despite the rapid evolvement of the SATA drives, there are no SATA ready File Protector enclosures yet. Since most 3.5” disks and many 2.5” disks are using the SATA interface at the moment, a SATA ready File Protector enclosure would be more than welcome.
Who would we recommend it to: The File Protector enclosures are priced in order to be affordable by the majority of people. They may not be the cheapest available, but they offer good quality while not breaking the bank. With the included Backup4All software, they will be more desired by people who value their data and want to use them as secure data backup solutions.
We only have doubts concerning the value of the 1.8” enclosure, not because of the enclosure itself but because of the price of a 1.8” drive, as they are overly expensive and will offer a very low price to performance ratio, even though they are very small and convenient.
Considering the above, we believe that the File Protector series should be in your shortlist, so we present them with our Shortlist Award.
