Ultra is a well-known manufacturer of computer components even though they are relatively new on the scene. They has a vast product line and mostly focus on power supply products, since these are the products that put them squarely on the map. Ultra virtually invented the modular power supply units after all and their first modular power supply units were a great success. Today we have two new power supply units from Ultra, the X-Finity 500W and the X-Finity 2G 600W. Ironically, neither of them are modular, but still both of them are high class units.

Ultra invested a great deal of attention on the design of the packages. The pictures of the units are clear, as well as the specifications and features. The bundle of both units is typical though, a simple AC power cable, 4 screws and a detailed manual with a lot of data concerning the units (specifications, efficiency graphs, etc).

The very material, shape and design of the 500W X-Finity version are unique to begin with. Ultra did not use a typical steel power supply unit chassis for this model; an aluminium chassis took its place instead. The black anodized aluminium chassis certainly makes the unit distinctive at first sight. The chassis is ATX standard compliant, although it is a little bit longer than standard units. The cooling of the unit is ensured by a 135mm fan placed at its bottom. The assembly of the unit is very clean; even the fan guard is installed from the inside of the chassis in order to keep the unit looking simple but elegant. The only sticker is placed at the top of the unit, with detailed specifications and the approvals of the unit on it.

The 500W X-Finity model is not modular, but it features Flex Force cables. While Flex Force cables are like normal cables, they are easy to route inside a case and have titanium like finish. They are also supposed to aid the airflow in the case, as they allow the air to travel 30% more effectively. The 500W X-Finity model provides enough connectors for a unit of its level. As well as the standard ATX/EPS 24-pin connector and the 8-pin 12V cable there are 8 Molex connectors, 2 floppy connectors, 4 SATA connectors and finally 2 PCI-E connectors. All of the connectors are black.

The interior of the 500W X-Finity model is surprisingly tidy and spacious. That is most probably because of the larger chassis used though. Most of the components are branded as ‘Ultra’ components but most appear of above average quality. The large golden heatsinks take care of the cooling, with the help of the 135mm fan. While the heatsinks are not excessively large, they are well designed and a good airflow from such a large fan should be more than enough to keep the unit very cool with a minimal amount of noise generated. The 500W unit also has two 12V lines instead of one.
