I'll be fitting the triple slot cooler from my 9800 to the 6850 at the start of the summer holiday, in 8 weeks time - no point doing so before then, as I don't play games during term time anyway. I'll be sure to post lots of pics when I do.

Once that's done, I'll have an unsaleable 9800GTX+ PCB lying around, but nevermind - that card was free from HH too

The mounting holes are different. The cooler currently on the 9800 has an adaptor plate to overcome this issue, but the 6850 cooler does not.

Even if it did, the 6850's cooler lets the 6850 hit over 80 degrees under load, I wouldn't want to try it on a card with a much higher TDP (e.g. a 9800GTX+).

OK after the issues i had last time i tried a driver upgrade does anyone have any advice on uninstalling and reinstalling on Win 7 64 bit with Driver cleaner

Apologies for the thread necro, but I thought it made as much sense to post this here as anywhere.

I got back from uni yesterday, and decided to fit my Geilid cooler to the 6850 before installing it in my PC. Sorry for the awful, awful phone camera:

Excellent, time to fit the Geilid Icy Vision 2!



Now this cooler is supposed to fit 6850s, so I can only assume that Powercolor are using a non-standard PCB layout. In case it's not clear from the photos, what you're seeing is one of the heatpipes from the base of the cooler being blocked by a capacitor.

This is a bit of a pain. I've installed the card in my system with the reference cooler, which is fine, but too noisy for me to consider using it for folding, for example.

In addition, I now have a fancy triple slot cooler lying around that's worth more than the card it was attached two. I say was, because I have run out of thermal paste to reinstall it on the 9800 even if I did have a use for it. I guess I'll probably end up keeping the Geilid until I one day get a card that fits it.

That's a bummer, blib..

That's the thing with coolers... I have a perfectly capable CM Hyper 212 that I can't mount on a, say socket 1155 if I decide to upgrade sometime..
I have to buy new retainers, which BTW, are hard to find around here...

Amazon - I got my 1366 bracket from there.
Alternatively, get an ASRock board as they have extra holes
