Temp?
Ok got my new Shuttle system running with basically the specs in my sig except in a shuttle. I have a 550 P4 running at stock speeds with ddr 400 and 1 sata drive and 1 DVD RW drive. Got X800 pro also installed. These are the temps i get during World of Warcraft.... are they good or should i worry about the heat?
The GPU has bee around 51 ish. |

CPU is a little warm, as is the board temp(due to the CPU i can almost assure you)
system and video card temp are fine though |

any hints? This CPU seams to have always run HOT.... i have seen it up to 70C in both my old case and this one... could it be bad or is this just this chip?

those P4's are supposed to run absolutely fine at fairly high temps (I've read anything up to 70 / 80 C), but obviously better for them not to. Don't know if I believe that yet or not.
![]() personally I'd worry about the board getting that hot though, seems high. Your cpu run that hot with big cooling in a regular atx sized system?? |

yah it ran pretty hot... not sure exactly how hot but it was considerably higher then my wifes p4 533 fsb 2.4
Edit: found this post about the temps It was pretty hot then too a little lower but still hot.http://www.hardwareheaven.com/motherboards-networking-misc-forum/68228-550-pentium-4-socket-775-temp.html Could the chip be bad or is this just normal for them? |

I had cpu temp problems with a p4 before. The pins (don't know how to call those metal bars) on the cpu's heatsink were close apart and dust did not pass well between them. So the fan pushed dust toward the heatsink and this dust got stuck, reducing the air flow on the heatsink. I've seen the temps go as high as 100 deg. celsius on this pc. At that moment, the protection circuitry in the cpu kicks in (if the temp protection on the mb is off) and the computer shuts off. It has shut off itself a few times already and it's still running.
All I had to do to fix the problem was remove the dust on the heasink once in a while. After removing the dust there, the temps go back down to about 50-55 deg. C. That was with a P4 Prescott. You may have the same problem. Make sure there is no dust on the heatsink of the cpu. Placing dust filters where the air enters the case and cleaning them once in a while may help. I never used them though. |

The system is 2 days old so i doubt it is dust. I checked all the other fans and it looks fine. Question... the intructions tell you for the cpu goop to put on an even layer... so i did and made a nice white thin layer on the top... could i have put too little or much of the goop?

I started using Arctic Silver 5, and I noticed (after a decent amount of 'breaking in' time) a genuine 4/5C decrease on my cpu temp.
It's not too expensive, one tube goes a loooong way, and they have a nice simple instruction bitty on their site: http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_s...tions_big2.htm and belive them when they say you don't need much. btw, can someone tell me which button on my keyboard I use for the 'degrees' symbol?? |

cool think i might pick some up got 30 days to decide if i liek this case... i do have to say i have been playing with the fan controls and really have got it to stay under 60 C so it is getting better. THink it is just needing to adjust it to what i want to see... i mean full blast and the case is definatly cooler but then i have a hair dryer in my computer LOL.

if it's the fancy heatpipe cooled shuttle I'd stick with it.
that's what I built for my fiancee and it's cool and quiet, even with my cpu and gf card in (the ones in my sig). on the other hand you could try and rma either the cpu or the case to make sure that's not the problem. if you've had the cpu in a larger, better cooled case and it's run a lot cooler, I'd consider rma'ing the shuttle. It shouldn't run much (any) hotter than in a regular sized case really if you're not oc'ing. |

ok after fan adjustments i am getting 48C when idle and 54-57C while gaming. Gets sorda loud as the fan is running 2200 rpm but not too bad. I think AC5 might be a good idea. The CPU has always been somewhat hot though as i hear all 775 p4's are. From what i remember 58 was about what i got while full gaming in my large case with 5 80mm fans lol.

48 idle is what i have on my Xeons in a well ventilated Tsunami case, so that sounds about right for a prescott in SFF, and if load stays below 60, you're good to go

Its stuck at 61 - 62 Fully loaded with WoW
but really never goes above that. THink i might try some artic silver and see if it helps. 61ish seems about right for this dang chip.....

Well 61°C is still a bit warm. I believe yours should throttle down at 70°C.
Where is the sensor for your motherboard located? |

well it was sitting at about 60 - 61 C under load and 45 - 48 idle.
I took it all out and put my old case back together to see the temps. Fully loaded i am getting 55- 57 C and idol of about 40C. I am just wondering if i shoudl keep the shuttle or ditch it since the load is too much for the little case... I am really torn! |

Should i worry with 61C? I mean i read the chip is ment to do 72 for thermal scaling... though i have no idea what that means?

Does that mean at 72 is really the highest you can safely go? then 61 does not seem to bad.

programs like hmonitor and the like don't even give you a mild warning until the temp hits 65°C+, and a serious warning after 75/80°C for that processor, so I wouldn't worry overly.

honestly i love the case just worried as i did not want to really FUBAR my proccessor
i mean who wants to buy another $300 proccessor. Even if i go AMD the same level of CPU would cost about the same!I am really highly considering keeping it and was going to try a slot cooler but hard to find a slim quiet slot cooler. |

Ok any one know a good slot cooler? Decide to keep the system
i mean my large computer really only decreases by 3 C so it is not too bad. was looking at one of these or something similiar.http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...888-112&depa=0 Need somethign slim as i bought one of the single fan black ones and it did not fit. |
