Midi to Joystick, and Casio Keyboard Question

Hello,

I want to get an older Casio keyboard to play midi into music software (FL Studio) on my older
Compaq computer.

I'm using Win98SE, the keyboard is Casio MT-260, and the soundcard is Sound Blaster Live 5.1 model SB0060US.

Before I try to hook up this Casio to my computer, things are working fine with KX and FL Studio. But Now I want to hook up this Casio to play/record midi into FL Studio...and I want to know if things are likely to work out, before I go out and buy the cable.

I have to get a midi to joystick type cable, because my computer does not have midi input (ie the round DIN? Ports? on the computer).

So what do I do, just plug the cable into the Casio and into the soundcard joystick, then restart the computer and hope things work?

Do I need special software for the Casio?

Do I need to configure KX in a certain way?

What should I expect to have to do in order to be able to play this Casio keyboard into FL Studio, and have the midi notes show up in FL Studio.

Thank you very much for any ideas about this.

For using the Casio as a MIDI CONTROLLER - you simply connect its MIDI out to the (new) MIDI interface connected to your Joyport.

Then SELECT the 'KX UART MIDI IN' for midi input - or possibly by default FL may use ALL available MIDI INPUTS.?? I dont have FL installed so I cant test it.

Some things to be aware of..

The MIDI cannel outputed from your keyboard (1-16 possible) may need to match a tracks channel - OR the TRACK set to OMNI (receive all midi channels)

Casio/Yamaha KB's have those 'easy chords' for auto accompanyment that would output to multiple MIDI channels when auto accompanyment is PLAYING. If you wish to 'capture' such playback - you need to set FL to sync from an external MIDI device - which would match FL tempo and depend on the CASIO to start/stop FL sequencer.

If you have the CASIO manual - it should have a MIDI IMPLEMENTATION chart that would explain some of the details I mentioned above.

..what is a midi interface please?

Is a midi interface something extra that I need to buy that will sit between the casio and the joyport on my soundcard?

Is it a piece of hardware, or is it software?

Or can I just run the cable from the casio output directly into the joyport on the soundcard?

A midi interface (the thing you said you were going to buy)
Is what Im refering to the cable thing that plugs into the joystick port (joy port) on your sound card. So you can physically conncet a midi cable to your PC.

Okay, I have

-the casio keyboard
-the joystick port (this is the 15 pin thing on my soundcard correct?)
-the cable, (which is the thing I referred to that I need to go and buy) which I believe will have a round midi connector on one end to plug into the casio...and a 15 pin connector on the other end to plug into the joystick port

And now I wonder what is the midi interface? Is the midi interface something that I'll need to buy that is other than the casio, the cable, and the joystick port?

NO - FORGET I SAID MIDI INTERFACE

Its just a more correct term to use for that MIDI DIN to 15PIN adaptor... that you said your were going to buy.

Maddogg6 I want to thank you very much for your replies and nice help.

I did get the cables and everything is working fine.

For anybody else doing this, just connect cables, midi in connector to midi out on keyboard, and vice versa, start computer, open FL and at midi settings check enable at input, select controller and select generic, switch casio power button to midi, select an area in the piano roll, press record in FL and start playing...when you press stop, all the notes you played show up in piano roll.

That's how it works here.

the bulk of my pont before was -
its a bit more complicated when using 'single finger' or 'easy' chords and auto accompanyment on the casio - when using those KB's as a MIDI CONTROLLER.
