drum channel 10 woes

I thinnk I had this figured out with windows 98 but now with XP I'm having trouble.

I want to be able to audition my many pre-programed midi drum patterns. (ones I've picked up from around the web) Since by default they are set to channel ten, the synth does not play them. I must load into my software sequencer (ntrack) and change to any other channel, then I can hear it.
Even if I send channel 10 to the proper place using the "router" I still get nothing.

I'm using the sonic implant small ambient drum soundfont loaded as I would any font (so it's not a general midi font)

Any ideas?
