Loading sound font

I've got this GM collection that's 230 megs in size. I have 1500 megs of memory, but it won't load on Wink 2k with 3538, I think version L or M. I re-boot to XP, the sound font loads no problem. kX v 3538 but, was there a N version? I know it's different from my 2K system due to a few plug-ins and skins not being compatible.

When did the old skins stop being compatible, was it 3539 or before? Why the font won't load in 2K is a bit of a mystery.

The registry setting in page file size seems the same in both OS so I'm wondering if the driver version has someting to do with it?

3538m was the last 3538 version.

What date does it it show in the About... window? That should give a clue as to which 3538 version it is (i.e the date should match (or be very close to) the date of the thread were it was released, etc.).

How much memory is actually available for use on the Win2K system?

Hi Russ,

Win 2k, 3538 was compiled on Jan 26 2006, Xp's version is Jan 22, 2007. I didn't realize they were a year apart. Maybe I'm still using version i or j.

Both os'es run on the same machine, just different hard drives, they both have the same ram.

Maybe I'll try an upgrade, I just hate to have to redo my dsp set-ups and lose the cool TS skin. I'm of the: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" bunch, besides I only have a Live card and it works just fine with 3538. Would I gain anything with say 3541? I doubt it.

But this sound font issue bugs me cause it sounds great on xp, but all my music apps are on 2k.

BTW, it's called Crisis, the sound font that is. You can find it here.

BismutNetwork. This is the site of the Soundfont Crisis General Midi, of the book Chon257 and of some other cool stuffs.

But beware, this guys website if a big system hog and his design leave a lot to be desired. But, scroll down and you'll see the two files for download. Well worth it IMO.

Edit. Version 1.8 is the one I'm using. There's another version but I think it's for Audigy only, not sure.

From the release dates, you are probably using 3538j under 2K, and 3538m under XP. I am not aware of any changes regarding soundfont loading between those versions, but there was various other changes that could possibly have an effect (i.e. the old skin issue causing kX to eat memory, etc).

You might try installing 3538j under XP, just to see if you are able to load the soundfont under XP with the same kX version.

Maybe, maybe not... in general ASIO performance is better in the later 3538 versions (unless you are using one of the programs (like Traktor, etc) that do not seem to like the newer versions), plus the skin/memory issue fix, etc. You would probably want to stick with a 3538 version though, since somewhere a long the line Win2K support was lost (I forget which version).

I did a little searching and found among the many changes between j and m version, the dll for sfman was changed. However, I might just eventually move to xp on both drives and use one for music only, we'll see. It's not that big a deal as I have a few large fonts that load in 2k for now.

Thanks.
