new install, can't play soundfonts??

just installed sblive 0222 with kx 3534, on xp, using computer muzys sequencer, no previous creative driver installs, midi keyboard to midi/joystick port.
I can play soundfonts when playing through the sequencer, but if I try playing without running the sequencer I get no sound. Is it possible to us the sblive synth directly , why does this not work,?
Any ideas/direction appreciated
