"Classic" Midi SoundFont??
(I'm sorry if someone's posted something along these lines, I searched around, but couldn't find it if it was here.)
Ok, here's what I'm trying to accomplish -- I have three sound cards. ES1370 (using creative's drivers), an SB0060 5.1 (using KX Drivers), and a SB0090 10k2 (using kx drivers). Before switching to KX, I had it set up so that I could use the hardware based midi banks (not soundfonts). The effect was that I could play video game midi files (like Chrono Trigger) and they would sound like they did back on the Super NES. Has anyone gotten a soundfont (or other method) of getting this kind of thing to work? I know I should want /better/ midi sound than that, but for what I do, I prefer the "classic" kind of sound for the midis I'm playing (yay for quasi-emulation of old hardware). --Para |

are you talking about the opl sounds? The midi sound before wavetable? If it's opl sound you are looking for, and I am not sure what Windows version you are using, but there is an emulation driver for the opl type of sound for windows 98. Doesnt work with xp though.

I'm using WinXP. I'm not sure of the difference between OPL or Wavetable sound. I thought perhaps it was wavetable or a soundfont. I don't know a whole lot about this sort of thing.

Most old video game consoles and arcade machines use FM synthesis chips such as the Yamaha OPL series for music and/or sound. The Adlib and ISA Sound Blaster cards used OPL chips for music as well.
There are probably software synthesizers (maybe built into sequencer/tracker programs or maybe available as Windows MIDI drivers) available that make sounds similar to the OPL series or other FM synthesis chips, but I wouldn't know since I'm not into that kind of thing myself. I just know a little about it because I like video games and computer music
