MIDI "software rendering"
is it possible to use the computer's memory to play soundfonts larger than the card supports and route the outgoing sound into a wave device ?

Yes, that's the beauty of the SB cards - you can load soundfonts until you've filled half (I think) of the available RAM on your system, not just the onboard memory.
I think that's the answer to your question, although I didn't understand the second part so well If you don't want to use the cards soundfont capability, then you can use any number of software synths, VTSi plugins, etc... but that's kind of defeating the object (whihc is to use the card's resources to the full...)

the main concern for me is the quality, software synths support very high qualities
at the moment I do not know if sound fonts's sounds have higher quality than that - and quality at it's first stage means sampling rate and sample accuracy (software synths can do 24 bits), if the quality of the sound fonts is at or higher than 24/96 then sound fonts could be better and can be considered an option, but if they are not as good as 24/96 and/or they have been recorded from analogue stuffs with say -66, -40 db snr then I think you understand the point
