Cannot convert MIDI to Audio Wave, Cubase or Nuendo

I am using Cubase VST 5.0 and Nuendo 1.X, and I cannot convert midi to audio. With the creative drivers I am able to choose the recording source as "All that you hear" or "Line Input", but with the KX drivers I cannot find that option and I don't think it actually exists, although I hope I'm wrong. Anyways, the result is that when I try to record audio from midi with cubase, or try to export midi to audio mixdown with Nuendo, they both give me an error, "no audio input found". I believe it is a problem with the recording source, but I am not sure for certain. If anyone is not having problems converting midi to audio with the KX driver, please let me know.

Hi everyone,

Just to be clear, the problem is that the only inputs I can choose from are from the AC97 section of the mixer and there is no option to choose the recording source as MIDI. I cannot figure out how to be able to record an Audio Wave out of a MIDI file. If anyone has had this problem or knows how to configure it, or if you know that the KX driver doesn't or does include this functionality, I would really appreciate any input.

You should be able to convert your MIDI tracks to Audio with the kX driver. You have to have your sequencer and DSP setup setup correctly.

Here's a guide that might help you. The 1st example dsp with the ProFX plugins looks like it can work for you: http://driverheaven.net/showthread.php?t=57078

Also I've written a guide that has a MIDI to audio section, yet it's specifically for SONAR ad kX users. Still if you read this section you may get some ideas of how to set up the kX DSP to get your MIDI tracks converted to audio. Here's a link:

Also search this forum. I'm sure you can find help for doing this.

Thanks for the reply thomasabarnes. I discovered however probably where the problem is coming from. I don't seem to have any VST inputs, which is what the error message is saying. I have a SB Live platinum with midi input and output and have successfully recorded midi and can load and use soundfonts and everything is working except I can't even record audio because Cubase and Nuendo don't have any available inputs, and still cannot record midi to audio most likely because of the input problem. So the problem I have right now is that there is a "Line in" on the back of my SBLive as well as a second "Line in2" on the Live drive front panel that I cannot use to record because the KX driver is not giving Cubase or Nuendo any inputs. Is this normal, and is there a way to fix this problem?

Also I have gone to both Links, and I configured the DSP section of the KX driver as shown from the first link which did not work, and the previous step is where it asks you to configure the inputs in cubase, but when I try to open inputs, its says there are no inputs. I checked step by step and there was nothing wrong with my setup except the input problem. I will try the DSP setup again when the VST input problem is fixed.

Choose in cubase/nuendo kX-ASIO driver, set it and your project to 48kHz, save the project as default. Restart your application. Check in multimedia properties for full hardware acceleration and best sample quality. That should fix your problem.

Well I already have chosen the KX Asio driver in nuendo and cubase, but I did not change the sample frequency to 48 khz. You think that will give me inputs? Is it not possible to mix down audio to CD Quality (44.1khz) with the kx driver? I'll try it and get back to you.

THanks Travelrec! That worked right away with Nuendo 1.x, I didn't even have to shut down the program. Although Cubase most likely would make me shutdown the program and restart it to get the inputs, although I don't really use cubase and I'm not going to check. So now all I have to do is to go through that tutorial again to setup the DSP section of the KX driver to allow MIDI to audio recording, and If that works, just save a .kx template for mixing down MIDI to Audio. I'll post back with the results or problems. Thanks again!

Glad you get it working. Itīs (for now) not possible, to record in ASIO with 44.1 kHz due to a hardware limitation. You can use the audio-export function and then sample your project down to CD-standard after recording and mixing process. BTW: working on 48Khz-projects gives you a slightly better sound in any case.
