Re: Cell processor faster than Core i7 965 XE for H.264 encoding
not surprising, a Core i& is still a "general purpose" CPU, while the Cell is designed almost purely for graphics - that design would have huge benefits for linear video encoding
I'd say current gen graphics cards would rape the Cell at the same task though

yeah a Nvidia GTX295 or HD4870x2 would tear apart a cell cpu in terms of video related tasks...
actually in likely a number of tasks provided with the right kind of hardware to software communication. They are both BRUTES when it comes down to their calculation and encoding/decoding poweress

Re: Cell processor faster than Core i7 965 XE for H.264 encoding
indeed.. i'm kinda happy that win7 makes better use of the gpu..... but we definitely need more programs that actively draw things in 3D and make heavy use of the gpu....
I personally which that someone would develope a browser that actively wraps current html and php and so forth into a 3D format and displayed, as well as provide additional effects and such that enhances them, like making 3D animation flash videos fully 3D making use of the capabilities of the card.
