Web site problems as Windows 7 beta hits

Microsoft's Windows Web site will be the place to go to get the Windows 7 beta later on Friday. At the moment though, many users are encountering just error messages when they try to reach the site. This was the message I got--"HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable." Is anyone out there getting through?

Microsoft brought some of this on themselves by saying on 2.5 million downloads will be allowed. It's created a sort of land rush. BTW, you need a Windows Live ID to get it.

Hilarious: I got to a certain point in the process, where it took me to a page in Live Search which said:

We did not find any results for betaexperience productkeys win7 32 enus default aspx.

If it wasn't for the 2.5 mil cap I would just forget about it. Frankly, I probably should anyway. It's only good until August, and my time is more valuable than trying to get through.

It is hilarious when you get an error like I did above, tho!

gah... I still can't download it
I've tried the x86 version and it's fine ... want the x64 one
I have no issues at all with Vista x64 but hey, if they say they "fixed" memory issues and removed a lot of useless junk (Windows Mail, Windows Calendar etc...) then that's fine by me

a fresh install of Windows 7 Beta 1 x86 cost about 9gb of space whereas a fresh Vista x64 Ultimate ran at around 12-14gb if I'm not mistaken

for people who like using smaller (but faster) disks, less space eaten up by the OS is great.

i've been trying to get the 64bit version since 9am this morning..

the furthest i got was where it asked for my name and information (i was already signed into the live ID) and my intentions for using it as well as my background. Clicked submit... waited about 15 minutes...... and then it told me it couldn't find any results for my quere

no doubt the first people to get the file will have it torrented.... and then there will be about 600 torrents all claiming the to be the official when in actuality it'll be a virus

i downloaded a pre-release (Beta 1 7000 etc...) and it installed fine on a fresh hard disk
it works great on a cheap DELL at work...

I understand from reading during the course of the afternoon that the first 2.5 million who download will be able to get activation keys to allow the software to run until sometime in August, and you can clean install it too.

The beta should still be available for download after that, but will only run for 30 days, after which, running the "slmgr -rearm" command will allow the beta to run another 30 days and can be used three times, for a total of 120 days.

I ran into the same issues trying to download it today...

I too have received 2 beta keys for x64

- went to the download site with firefox, got the key, "DOWNLOAD" button didn't work
- went to the download site with IE7, got another key... same info though... "DOWNLOAD" button still didn't work

got 2 keys but no way to download it geez

guess I'll wait for someone to post it up a torrent site

It's standalone, the iso's MS are offering don't need Vista.

That being said, if you don't like Vista, you probably aren't going to like Windows 7 either.

I have my key as well and will wait til MS allows the Beta to be DLed until I use it.

Didn't say I didn't like vista... I just don't have it. The download will do a clean install or an upgrade from vista sp1 only, won't upgrade from other versions. It was clarified in the install instructions on the download page ... which wasn't available yesterday when I read that "upgrade only" on their site.

Takes forever to download though...

love it, bit more complicated to get drivers installed for my stuff but it still works after letting windows browse my driver folders.

anyone having trouble accessing intel INF UPDATE utility for vista or any version of windows ... it keeps giving me a not found page and suggesting to search.. which is just an endless loop..

not to mention realtek's website.. every time i try and get the HD driver, you hit the check for agreement.... and then hit next.. and it takes you to the front page..
