I have a couple more suggestions.

The first would be to rename the Fallout 3 folder where your saved games are located. That, or delete the fallout3.ini file itself. The idea is that you get yourself a clean ini file. If you brought the save game folder from the previous install you most likely brought that file with it. This way the file gets recreated by the game, and does so based on what it detects now.

Second, try running the game directly from the fallout3.exe file, bypassing the launcher. The launcher is the only executable that has the copy protection in it, so the idea here is to bypass that (just in case the copy protection is causing the problem).

Third, directly running the game from the fallout3.exe also allows you to try running the game in compatibility mode.

Something I forgot to ask is, what version of Fallout 3 are you running? The retail one, or a direct download version, such as off Steam?

Re: Fallout 3 on Windows 7 Beta 1

I've tried all of your solutions, but nothing happened. I'm using the retail one with the 1.0 version. I've also updated to the 1.6 version, but nothing happened(again)

I hope it is a driver issue indeed, because I want to bring my saved games from vista to windows 7 without a hitch ... Fallout 3 was a big big time sink !

Re: Fallout 3 on Windows 7 Beta 1

hi guys im having an issue with win7 x64 where i cant run saved games or do a new game.

if new game is selected i get a load screen for a few seconds and when it looks like the game will start a black screen shows instead and i have to task manager kill the fallout3.exe

if load save is chosen, it freezes right there.
its a fresh install of fallout 3, no patch

specs
ati hd4670 gfx card, latest drivers for win7
core2duo e6600, win7x64 rtm (dual boot with winxp3).
please let me know if you need more specs

ive pretty much tried everything ive found on the net

1 strange thing ive noticed is i can still run my fallout 3 copy on my winXPsp3 boot, and i run it in window mode to look at the fallout3.exe cpu usage...it barely uses cpu unless on load...but with WIN7x64, fallout3.exe is ALWAYS using 50+% of cpu? when the black screen comes up, fallout3.exe is stuck at 50% cpu.

i ran process explorer and the thread its stuck on is for a quartz.dll, which supposibly used by all kinds of codec drivers

also when fallout 3 is installed, windows programs & features will not report the fallout 3 install size...

i cannot put these symptoms together for a fix, but so far its pointing to fallout 3 needing a patch for win7x64.

any ideas? comments?

thank you in advance.

Fallout 3,and all latest games works fine in windows 7.You need to update the directx files. DirectX 11 available for both windows Vista and Windows 7. If you are running Fallout 3 on windows 7, then this game will crash constantly if you do not have the right video drivers. I am using nvidia 185.85 and it works fine.

Re: Fallout 3 on Windows 7 Beta 1

Just update the directx files. DirectX 11 available for both windows Vista and Windows 7. I had this problem and I fixed it by updating directX files. DirectX 11 contains all ingredients required to take computer gaming to a new level of realism by making characters more life like.
