Question on XP Mode

Well actually more than 1, im really curious about this, and would like to know from first hand usage how this works! and what real use it has. Since i wont be using it at all in the near future because my poor processor (E7200) does not support Hardware Virtualization. Shame, im not too fussed about this, the only things i miss about XP while using vista wont be fixed by some fancy XP mode, the only things that could fix them are by dusting the old XP disc off.
So you guys... what does it do?
Also, for those of us who cannot use it, will we HAVE to install it? for someone who is used to tweaking and optimizing this is a real issue.
Still waiting on the Download!
Thanks
Jím

Re: Question on XP Mode

Hi Jim,

I can only answer one of your questions:

I was under the impression that, like Virtual PC and it's peers, this will be enhanced by Hardware Virtualisation tech but will not need it.

From what I've read, it's a separate download, so no you don't have to install it, I'm hoping that's true........ be a waste of disk space otherwise.

Re: Question on XP Mode

It's a seperate D/L and really aimed at business users.

There were/are a lot of businesses that didn't upgrade from XP to Vista because of older applications that weren't compatable. Some just because the developers were to danged lazy in their coding, some because the developers couldn't/wouldn't update the applications, and others because the developers are no longer in business.

With WIN 7, the XP mode allows a business to upgrade and develop/use newer applications, while still having the ability to use their old applications.

It can have SOME use for the average user depending on what applications you have, but you WILL have to have one of the 'higher end' versions of WIN 7.

I'm going to give it a try in one partition, as my wife has some OLD games and a Geneology program that don't run in Vista and/or WIN 7. If it works as promised, I will FINALLY be able to get rid of the lone XP 32 bit partition I have on this system, and still 'keep momma happy'

Re: Question on XP Mode

Yes it works- and it is very cool.

It is a two-step installation from M$-
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/vir.../download.aspx
first you install the virtual PC beta, then the windows XP mode beta.
took about 45 min to download and 10 min to install.

I have dual monitors with 7 running on one and XP running on the other simultaneously- my curser flies between both without switching or re-booting.

I don't really know what I'd use it for, but it is really cool to have.

Re: Question on XP Mode

Do you get a virtual pc as in the previous version sof virtual pc where you were given an extremely basic virtual system, or do you get to use your full system specs to their eh fullest, but in XP mode?

In other words, would one be able to run full AAA XP game titles under this mode (in case they don't run under the normal Vista/7?

Also, is this XP version going to be an XP32 or 64?

Not sure on the other questions as I haven't tried it but on this one since it is for compatibility of older XP software I think it would be 32 bit XP. Not completely sure though I can't find any conclusive information on it googling or on MS.

Re: Question on XP Mode

Yes- it's 32bit-
Microsoft Windows XP Professional - Version 2002- Service Pack 3

I am not a gamer so I won't be loading any games on it but I don't think you'd want to use it for that anyway. It is has only medium(16 bit) color quality and doesn't look very sharp.

It is certainly designed for use in applications that need XP but don't require allot of GPU power.

Re: Question on XP Mode

So basicaly all this XP mode is nothing but a marketing trick for saying they will include with the system a 2009(or whatever) version of the MS Virtual PC.

Meh. Useless marketing BS.

Re: Question on XP Mode

I am not against the idea, I am sure it will prove useful to some people. It is just the way it is presented that makes it sound much more than what it is that pisses me off a bit. But, that's nothing new I guess.

I hear ya but for some people like myself and I saw OldBuzzard post on it as well it eliminates that nagging XP partition

Exactly!!

I just hope that those that want it have a processor that supports virtualization.
A guy on another forum has an E7500 and is bummed because he can't do it.

Didn't you read my post (#5) in this thread?

It's FAR from "Useless marketing BS".

Again, it's aimed at BUSINESS USERS. There are thousands and thousands of businesses out there that didn't upgrade from XP to Vista because of application incompatability issues. By offering the XP MODE, Microsoft is giving these users a path for upgrade that allows them to use those old applications while still having the advantages that WIN 7 has over XP. For those users AND Microsoft it's a win-win situation. Microsoft gets the $$ from them for WIN 7, and the business don't have to spend $$$$$ in order to be able to use it.

Now the FACT, that there are a lot of individual users that can use it is just 'icing on the cake' for MS, as that means that there are going to be a lot of us that will be buying one of the higher end versions of WIN 7 so that we can use it as well.

I'd call it Marketing GENIOUS, rather than Marketing BS.

Re: Question on XP Mode

I DIDN'T SAY that the extra compatibility is useless. I said that the way they PRESENT it is MARKETING BS since it is nothing but a MS VIRTUAL PC 2009 edition where the MARKETING people make it sound like it is something FAR MORE.

UNDERSTOOD?

Re: Question on XP Mode

Looks like I was wrong - it now seems that this will require Hardware Virtualisation.

Which is kind of odd really, as we know that virtualisation is very possible without it. I guess those of us without will just be carrying on using virtual machines / second PCs.

Re: Question on XP Mode

More info on this from Fudzilla-

Fudzilla - Windows 7 XP mode will not run on some Intel laptops

I like the last sentence which kinda sums it up-

"The XP mode does not support games and we would have thought that there were few applications that XP can handle that Windows 7 could not."
