Win 7 gaming issues

Anyone having issues getting games to run property on Win 7 RC 1(I'm using x64)?

I can't get a single game to run for more than a few minutes. Most just BSOD with random errors, usually indicating driver issues, however a couple times the games themselves have just closed out for no apparent reason. Tried the 9.4 and the drivers which were released last week. Games I've tried so far include: Left 4 Dead, World of Warcraft, COD4, GTA4 and Far Cry 2.

I'm just curious to hear anyone else's experiences, as most people I know seem surprised to find that I'm having issues.

Re: Win 7 gaming issues

any dual cpu I run it on is a nightmare right now so im afraid I haven't had much time playing games as even opening windows without it hitching is a nightmare. I have found it much less stable than the vista RC was thats for sure.

What is your graphics card for gaming?

An ati 4870.

Never had any problems with stability under Vista, and honestly Win7 seems to work fine with anything but gaming, though I continue to experience some troubles coming back from standby.

Funny that you mention the Vista RC, because I would agree (which gets dropped jaws from the general public). But I was running that pretty much without a hitch on my old AMD system and gaming was fine.

That behavior is often a hint towards memory instability issues. Run some diagnostics tool for an hour or more and see if something is reported. Windows 7's own Memory Diagnostics Tool is good enough to be useful, but when it starts running you'll have to set the number of passes to a lot more than the default two, or toggle the Extended test mode. In this case I bet that if it is memory related there should be an error found after just a few passes of the standard test though.

Re: Win 7 gaming issues

I don't think it's hardware related, honestly. The system ran perfectly fine under Vista as of a few days ago, regardless of the application. I think it's more to do with the OS or related drivers, afterall, the thing is a year away from going public and remains to be in development.

I'll probably just get another dual boot rolling and continue to test Win7 for curiosity's sake. My experience is that it's not ready as a primary OS, nor did I really expect it to be.

Played L4D and my other games without any problem... sounds like driver issues...

Re: Win 7 gaming issues

i've played with win7 on anything from a single core right throiugh to a quad core cpu.. (exluding triple core cpu's as i've yet to play with those)

However i've yet to experience a BSOD or crash of any sort in win7 with 3dmark.... any halflife 2 based gaming engine, Prince of persia 2008, any Unreal engine (UT classic through to UT3), Any of the doom based games, and a considerable number of other games in general. Actually i find they tend to be a little snappier in loading overall then vista x64. I haven't played with the 32bit version of win7 much at all though.

This is across a number of different hardware configurations, 90% of which are intel based with ATI graphics cards (nvidia drivers are a nightmare imo)... But of the AMD system's i've tried.... so long as they are using supported hardware, the systems works great. (supported as in audio and video cards that you can get drivers for win7)

Try reverting all overclocking and even jus run ram on auto, jus to rule that part out. win7 works fine for me, so far.

Re: Win 7 gaming issues

Just to jump in late here I played Tomb Raider Anniversary on the weekend for almost 3 hours on Win7 Ultimate RC (64 bit). I have been playing L4D and other games throughout the BETA builds with my 4870 .. no issues.

I've only got one game running under Win 7 sofar, that being Silent Hunter IV. Every once in awhile I notice a slight hesitation in the graphics, kinda like a hiccup. Other than that the game runs real smooth.

Just curious what drivers are you using under Win7?

Assuming you mean graphics drivers, the 9.4's and the 8.612's released the other day.

that's a walk in the park vs the various issues i've been seeing with win7 and nvidia since end of october.... there was pretty much no support to begin with.... but there were a number of issues more prevailent then that...

I installed Vista again last night and my problems haven't persisted. I'm going to dual boot with Win 7 this evening to see if I can't get my issues solved.
