Installing Win 7...
Ok, general question here and mainly because I've always installed OS's this way stemming back from 95/98 days.
I'm still currently using XP however I've got Win 7 installed on my old main box for testing. The way I've always setup machines is generally have about a 10/15 gig C:\ drive and every thing else goes into a D:\ drive. Once Win is installed, I map my documents over to the D drive and all apps go into it as well. Swap file also goes on this drive unless I have a different drive in the machine, then it goes there instead. This has saved my files stored in the documents folder more then a couple of times with Windows corruption especially back in the 98 days when OS recovery was much more a pain in the ass then it is now. Even with XP, this has saved my documents/save game files from being lost once or twice (pre SP2). With my current Win 7 test box, I've also get it setup this way but with a much larger C:\ drive but what I'm wondering is if there really is any benefit to loading it how I generally do now or with Win 7 I would get more of out of it with keeping it all on one large C:\ drive? Thoughts, comments? How do you guys generally setup your boxes? Jand |

Re: Installing Win 7...
Aside from having the swap file on a seperate PHYSICAL HDD, I doubt that there would be any difference in PERFORMANCE by installing it the 'default' way, or the way you have been installing.
As for any other benefits, it looks like you named them with: Quote:

Re: Installing Win 7...
typically no there isn't a major need for this...with win7/vista... a 50gb main C drive is my recommended minimum.... 100gb would be the real maximum if you plan on installing games to a D partition or documented on a D partition...

Re: Installing Win 7...
I was just more or less curious about this. I would generally like to think I know quite a bit about PC's but I'm smart enough to know that I will never know everything there is to know about them so I also have to ask what might be a better way of doing things.
Right now, I've got a 160 gig drive in my test box (40g C drive), I'll be moving Win 7 over to my main box shortly so I can test out the 64 bit version (maybe next weekend) which I have 2x 250 gig drives in Raid 0 so it's why I was asking. I want to test it out in the environment that I plan on running it in once it goes live. I've got a lot of programs that I use for both work and home besides games so... Had to ask, thanks guys for the reply's. Jand. |
