software compatability questions before going to windows 7

he guys, I am kinda tempted to try 7 after hearing how stable it really is. Vista has been really good to me, but as you all know 7 is apparently better. What I want to know is about how well a few pieces of software and hardware, and how well they will work. I am sure a few of you use some of same stuff as me.

1. My X-Fi XtremeMusic (both the card and the creative mixer, I really need the thx console, eq and stuff)
2. Limewire Pro 5
3. Roxio Creator 2009
4. Newsbin Pro
5. Vista codec pack and media player 12
6. Steam (what issues are these I hear about?)

I am pretty sure my printer should be fine, my whole system setup is in my profile. When I went to Vista, it wasn't bad at all because it was still Windows NT, just like this. But knowing some bastard companies like Creative, something will be nagging me to switch back before release ahha

I can only comment on 1 and 6 Bro.

On the Creative card don't hold your breath on Creative for proper drivers. I know Robert is working on these and sure the KX guys are as well.

On Steam I have tried every game from them I have on Win7 including Killing Floor which I tried last night with zero issues.

You could run the Windows Upgrade Advisor here. Click on the link to go to the page for the download from Microsoft. It'll tell you if there are any known issues with your installed hardware or software.

If you are doing an upgrade installation from Vista, there is an option during the install process that checks as well.

My Creative X-Fi Platinum works just fine. I have the Console Launcher with the Mixer, etc.

I just used the Vista 64 bit drivers/software, and then let the Creative Auto Updater do the updates.

Lime wire is evil..... so i can't comment on it aside from having a history of me removing it from peoples machines....

there is a Win7 codec pack floating around already....

Actually i typically recommend that no one install codec packs ever..... just install what you need, divx/quicktime/real alternative and VLC if you need the extra kick just in case (but win7 supports Native MKV playback..... sorta.....)

i can tell you, Steam works fine... TF2 wasn't working when i just got it installed, but it's only a matter of disabling Aero while running it (set this option in hl2.exe's Properties)
any other issue with Steam? nah, at least not me

Re: software compatability questions before going to windows 7

If you play any game which require PunkBuster you may have problems with Win7. That at least was the case for me and Win7 x64, couldn't play COD4 for more than 10 minutes. From what I hear this is an issue with may people, and evenbalance just aren't going to support Win7 until it goes RTM.

Re: software compatability questions before going to windows 7

my buddy installed it, he had problems with backing up steam games and geting his mkv files to work. He used it, he is having to do workarounds for numerous things. These articles have been praising it and me and my buddy have very similar setups. It is good to know from OldBuzzard creative crap is running properly, I don't want kX drivers they aren't for me. Since I have had vista from RC2 I have been very happy on my old comp and since I got this computer in 2007. People will just like 7 better because its essentially a reworked Vista and if we run vista in a year's time with 7 it will be the same, except 7 will have those new features and overshadow it. I don't see it as a required upgrade yet... but curious to try.

Oh judas, you do REALLY have to be careful with limewire pro. I never download videos or software (why would I?) off that thing, and I always check audio file length anyways to be safe.

edit - upgrade advisor said I am good for everything, slight issue with windows mail but thats all. I don't know if I should believe it hahaha

I ran it before upgrading from Vista SP1 on my eight (!) year old Athlon system - it said all I would need was new ATI Catalyst and CCC software. It was correct for me, but the only way to know for sure...

Re: software compatability questions before going to windows 7

i've encountered about 6 computers just recently with infected MP3 files that are INDEED the right length and play music just fine, but have an imbedded virus of some sort.

I confirmed it when i put the sucker on a flash drive and stick it in a clean machine..... nothing happens until you play it with any media player... but once it runs, if you have UAC off in vista... it goes beserk, and now in win7, the sucker will run without being to impeeded. Which drives me kinda nuts and pisses me off that the UAC in win7 is basically none excistant imo.
