Will Windows 7 run on Mobility FireGL V5200

When I run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor on my HP8400 with a "ATI Mobility FireGL V5200" it tells me that "Your current graphics adapter won't support the Windows Aero user interface" I am running the MS advisor program from my HP nw8400 that is currently running XP.

Also if I upgrade to Windows 7 will I be able to run 64bit currenlty I think it is running in 32bit.

I was planning on installing a new 320HD and loading Windows 7 and would like to know if this is going to work. I would like the Aero interface.

Re: Will Windows 7 run on Mobility FireGL V5200

The ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 is capable of running Aero, but the problem is that ATi hasn't published a driver for Windows 7 for it yet. You could use ATI Mobility Modder to fix that problem (the card is listed as supported), but it'd be best if someone with more knowledge about Mobility Modder could tell you that that particular GPU works on Windows 7 and what driver version do you need.

As for going 64-bit, it depends on your CPU, if it's 64-bit than yes. Of course, it only makes sense if you've got at least 2GB RAM as 64-bit software uses more memory than 32-bit so anything lower than that quickly gets eaten up.

As for going from 32bit to 64bit via an upgrade, you should be able to do it, but you have to do so by booting off of the DVD. You can't run the upgrade process from within the operating system. As always you should backup your data, and Microsoft even supplies a tool called "Windows Easy Transfer" (you can get it HERE) which you run on the machine, and it backs up the data you want. This particular version I've linked to is for transferring data from XP or Vista (32bit or 64bit) to Windows 7 specifically. Then once Windows 7 is installed you run it's built in tool to bring that data back in if the upgrade failed for you.
