Some older games not working...

Since upgrading to Win 7 I've been playing mostly new games however the fiance's kid came over this weekend and used my spare box which is still on XP. Most of the games we play are Co-op based FPS's. Basically most of the Ubisoft Tom Clancy games- Rainbow Six/ Ghost Recon series.

Ran into some issues with a number of their games. Rainbow 6 Raven Shield (the oldest of the bunch) worked just fine under Win 7 (played for a couple of hours since it was one of two that worked) along with GR 2.

Rainbox 6 Lockdown and Vegas however didn't. Lockdown wouldn't even install and actually corrupted my Win 7 to the point where I needed to do a restore from a restore point because of the StarForce "Software Protection" it installs with it. Vegas would launch and run... for about 3 minutes and then lock up entirely - every time - consistently. This was even with XP SP3 compatibility checked.

I'm installing this to find out if it works or not so I'll let you guys know but this was kind of a pain.

Software Protection. Update Remove Driver

Well, the work around for StarForce hasn't worked. If anyone is interested, I let them know if I found a fix for it.

Re: Some older games not working...

starforce as usual, sucks ass. Have you tried a non-cd patch? I can't provide link unfortunately, but people who want to have their game copy across the world, usually have good solutions. I had a similar problem with Vista, and thanks to a file from there I no longer have it (for another game, from Codemasters).

About Vegas, make sure you first install the latest patch before running the game in native mode.

Re: Some older games not working...

Thanks Blue, no I haven't tried that but I know of a couple of places that I could get that from. Thanks, hadn't thought of using that route.

Have to agree with StarForce sucking ass though.

Re: Some older games not working...

You said something about an "old box that used XP", were you trying to use that one, or the newer one with WIN 7 for the old games?

If the latter, since your specs say that you have WIN 7 PROFESSIONAL, and an AMD processor, then you can install WINDOWS XP MODE, and install them through that. I have it on my wife's partiton since she has an old geneology program that won't run in Vista or 7.

Here's a link to it:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/vir.../download.aspx

It really works nice. I'm thinking of putting it on my GAMING partition so that I can install CFS1 again.

Windows XP Mode will work on the Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate versions of 7.

Your processor has to be capable of using it as well. Almost ALL of the later AMD processors can use it, but it's hit or miss with Intel processors.

MS has a tool that will check your system and let you know if your system can use Windows XP mode.

Buzzard, thanks for the input... I've tried it for my work apps but it states on MS's site that it can't enable 3D mode and I can't get it past 800x600 visuals myself. I finally got it to except my Domain account and passord and was able to install the Exchange tools but that's been about it. Not much I can't do on Win 7 compared to XP other then games....

Re: Some older games not working...

um

windows XP mode is not a good idea for games..

AT ALL

it's virtual pc mode under a windows 7.... essentially you get zero 3D acceleration of any kind and without downloading a Virtual 3D acclerator to run within the virtual pc.... and even then, my HD4870x2's in crossfire managed a whopping 58 3dmarks on 3dmark01se

Yeah, I just found that out when I tried to install CFS1 using XP mode.

Sure would have been nice it it DID work with 3D apps though. As it is, I had to re-install XP on an open partition. Got a few guys that I fly IL2 1946 with that are wanting to do some "old school simming" with CFS1

This is more or less a heads up, if you install the game and then cancel the install before Starforce installs, along with running a non-cd patch, it works just fine in Win 7. Actually runs better then it did on XP, go figure.

Re: Some older games not working...

Interesting, but, I was able to play both RB6:Vegas and RB6:V2 on my Windows 7 x64 system.

So far, among the games I've got that I've tried, the only one that fails is KotOR...the original.

The ones I have played through again over the past year or so:

Mafia;
Far Cry;
Morrowind;
Syberia & Syberia II;
FlatOut and FlatOut 2; and
Freelancer.

There may be others I've forgotten.

I've got a whole lot more older games I haven't even attempted to install, though.

Re: Some older games not working...

VM Lite Workstation for the win. It runs without the need for hardware VT or AMD-V, but if you have either VM Lite runs faster (plus you can run multiple instances of VMT at the same time), it's overall faster than Virtual PC, has 3D support (although I haven't tried it with games), and it supports other image files such as VMDK (VMWare), VHD (Virtual PC), and HDD (Parallel).

Oh, and since it runs Virtual PC images, it can run the XP Mode image too on ANY of the supported operating systems.

Re: Some older games not working...

Just posting to say that I've tried Tipstaff's suggestion and that I'm very happy with it.

Installation is a breeze, especially if you already have XP Mode and, though it doesn't seem like a perfectly polished program, it works! I've successfully tried Worms World Party and DX Diag says DirectX 9.0c and passes the DirectDraw tests, so more advanced stuff probably works as well. I had a problem with in-game mouse behaviour, but toggling Disable Mouse Integration solved the issue. So far, me happy!

Is it free? Because if it is and it is a more powerful (games wise) VirtualPC, then...let's just say cookies for you Tipstaff.
