Lacking memory
A friend of mine recently decided to install Win7 Home Premium x64 on his PC and, although it registers that he has 4GB of memory it says next to it in brackets that there is only 3GB usable.
I can't recall the exact specs of the PC but I know that he has a Pentium D processor and two 2GB DDR2 sticks. I have double-checked that it is definitely the 64-bit version that was installed (which was the first thing I thought of) but I don't have any other ideas. Has anyone come across this before or has an idea of what can be tried to rectify the issue?

Re: Lacking memory
If he is using integrated graphics it's possible that it has reserved that gig of memory as vram.

Re: Lacking memory
He probably needs to enable the memory remap feature in BIOS. More information here.

Re: Lacking memory
some relatively cheap motherboards also have 64bit limitations implemented in them unfortunately.... while the chipset "supports" 64bit, it is still unable to address the entire memory. Sucks i know, only came across 2 boards like this.
