Utility which Sends Messages to other PCs on LAN?
I'm looking for a built in Windows 7 utility that's similar to the net send command from Windows XP, which would enable me to send a message to another PC on my home network.
I ran across the msg command, but I haven't had any luck with it. Apparently, it can only send messages to computers on the same domain and since this is a home network of two PCs, I don't have one set up. I can send messages to myself, but other than that it's error 5 and error 1722. Any help is appreciated, but if such a utility does not exist, no biggy, I don't really have a dire need for it, I'm just curious.

I've used a third party program before, Access Remote or Remote Access or something, don't remember really. It worked fine and could be used from outside my network as well if setup correctly.. |

First you need to allow it in Control Panel/System/Remote Settings (choose the "less secure" option if you'll be connecting from an XP machine) and if you want other people to be able to use it while you are connected to it, you need to enable concurrent sessions (bizarrely, no elegant way of doing that, you'll need this little utility to do it).

Re: Utility which Sends Messages to other PCs on LAN?
here's a link that has a couple of remote software solutions that are free - VNC, LogMeIn, TeamViewer to name a few (because of work, I'm using DameWare). Best Free Remote Desktop Alternatives | Geek with Laptop
As far as lan only based instant message type programs, I'm not sure. This site has a ton of freeware and shareware programs listed in categories so you might find something that will work there. Here's the free portion of the site. Freeware download categories at SnapFiles.com fully reviewed and rated Hope this helps some. Just remembered which one I've used before, Radmin, and it's worked fine for me. Using secure connection and you can limit what IP's can access it. Not free though.

For reference, NET SEND can work when you're not on a domain, as long as the local computer browser service has picked up the hostname of the other computer. It works better on a domain because DNS gets all of the computer names for you. If you were in a domain then I would recommend NetOp Remote control, which allows you to view or take control of any other computer in the domain that has the client application installed indiscriminately (ie: no warning message on the host computer that says "this person is watching you", though this is optional). It is a very handy tool with quite a lot of features. DameWare, as jandarsun8 mentioned, is also a terrific tool that gives you an amazing amount of info on remote computers and can install its client application remotely. Both of those work on Windows 2000 up to Win7, including all of the Windows server OS. RAdmin (Remote Admin) is not such a good tool as it uses up a lot of resources and basically just gives you remote access and not a lot else. You can use Remote Desktop between Windows 7 and XP machines, as long as you have the most recent version of the RD client installed on XP. Alternative remote control applications have already been listed by others, though if you're in a local network and you don't need to access either one over the Internet then I would recommend VNC as there is a freeware version and is easy to setup and administrate (password protection, specific IPs, etc). Alternatively, if you just want to send messages, why not use Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo, Xfire or the like?
