Sharing Folders Between 7 & XP - HALP!

I love hardware. That's my thing so when I come up against something in the OS that just doesn't click the way it should it drives me nutty. Such is the case with a few folders that I would like to share between Windows 7 and XP.

Here is what I have done so far.

-Ensured that both systems are in the same workgroup.
-Ensured that there are no firewall issues on either end.
-Created a new user on the Windows 7 system.
-Shared the folders and assigned sharing and security permissions to that new accounting with full control on the Windows 7 system.

From the XP system I can see the Windows 7 one but cannot access anything on it. I can't even see the shared folders on the Windows 7 system. I would have thought at this point I would get the login pop up window where I can enter the username and password of that new account.

Any ideas?

Re: Sharing Folders Between 7 & XP - HALP!

When I had the RTM version of Win7 one of my main complaints was getting it to network with my XP systems..... I'm no pro, but it was way beyond a hassle, and I never did get it to play nice.

I read through the info but it seems like that would only open things up to anybody unless I am missing something.

If I can get it setup I'll let you know exactly how.

Re: Sharing Folders Between 7 & XP - HALP!

I've actually gotten it to work before accessing an XP box from Win7.

I can't remember the exact steps anymore as that box is no longer running XP.

However I suggest turning off simple file sharing on both boxes, and give either a dummy account or your account ownership of the folder you wish to share.

Then try accessing it using the computer name such as \\XPBox\ instead of going into the workgroup location and see if it shows. One thing I've noticed is even if it doesn't show up, and you type in the name, it will still work.

Re: Sharing Folders Between 7 & XP - HALP!

I hear that accessing a XP system from 7 is easier but I'm looking to do the other way around.

Simple file sharing is disabled on the Windows 7 system but I did not check the XP one. A dummy account located on the Windows 7 system has full control to the shared folders but I can't even access the 7 system to see the shared folders.

Grr!

***EDIT: Ok, so I managed to get it working by disabling the password requirement in advanced sharing settings but I don't like leaving it like that. I'll keep trying to get it to fly with a user account tied to it or I suppose I could always setup FTP but jumping through these hoops shouldn't be necessary.

***EDIT: Well, it turns out that I didn't figure it out. My shared folders are still inaccessible, even without password protection. The public folder is available but it's kind of pointless having to move things over or have two copies of of the same file eating up drive space.

***EDIT: I found these instructions but you should not have to go into the registry to have sharing work properly.

Re: Sharing Folders Between 7 & XP - HALP!

I hate Windows 7 sharing too.

I got homegroup sharing working before but now it stopped working again. Only my image/video/audio streaming works (DLNA server and Windows Home Media) but I can't transfer any files and I can't even access even the public folders anymore. Stupid windows. It's funny that basically a 3rd party app let's me share/stream stuff without any hassle just by simply telling it which folder to share yet Windows itself won't let me.

oh and forget about sharing a folder in a laptop, ever. Windows seems to completely restrict laptop folders from ever being shared but laptops can access the other homegroup folders without a problem.

Re: Sharing Folders Between 7 & XP - HALP!

I tried setting up FTP but even that is giving me problems. I'm about to just say screw it and run Filezilla. It should do all of the work for me.

Re: Sharing Folders Between 7 & XP - HALP!

I have a second PC here running XP Pro x86. My main rig is Windows 7 Pro x64.

I do have sharing and access available from the XP to the W7 machine in this manner:

Win7/Users/Public

Anything I put into the Public directory on the Win7 rig appears and is accessible to the XP machine. In that directory I have Documents, Downloads, Pictures, etc. etc.

I can't recall offhand just what steps I may have gone through to add permissions etc but, I just checked and it is working.
