Importance classification
I got a new Windows Update message the other day (haven't installed it yet) for a new "important" update. I checked it out and it turned out to be Windows Live Essentials.
Well, usually, I'd think that quite bad that their Windows Live applications are being classified as important. No, this is worse: "Installing this update will replace your Windows Live Toolbar with Bingbar".

Seriously?

I don't have any toolbars anywhere, least of all on Internet Explorer. So, this "important" update is to install software that is the definition of useless to me.
If it was something like "this update patches a security hole that blah blah" fair enough but this?
This is why I always check the list of updates that Windows is telling me that I need...

What if they changed the description to: "This update patches a security hole that might allow the user to not install Windows Live Essentials."?

More seriously, I just ran Windows Update to see this for myself and Windows Live Essentials was classified as an optional update, so if there were no other important updates available to you, what you saw was probably a glitch (accidental or deliberate).

just checked.. and my windows vista and windows 7 found live essential 2011 as an update under optional updates....

I installed it... and you can deselect anything you don't want. I only updated the messenger, I didn't want the rest of it.
