HTPC switching sound device by itself.

I'm so annoyed with this and I can't figure out why this is happening.

I have the sound set to the onboard audio on my HTPC, it's the built-in VIA, to get the 5.1 channel sound to my stereo.

Though, sometimes the OS or whatever switches by itself over to HDMI, even if I have disabled HDMI in the Sound device settings. It gets activated and set to default and I have no idea why and how this happens.

any ideas? It's so annoying because everytime it happens I have to go in manually and change it again.

Noone with an idea?

Another thing. When I "turn it off" I only enter into power savings mode to make it start up quicker when I want it on.. but, sometimes it wakes up by itself for some reason. Don't know if it's because of some network access or what it is but I've woken up a few times to it turning on.

Re: HTPC switching sound device by itself.

i've been going over this .. and i was going to answer before but i was interupted (at work)..

honestly i do not have an answer for you...

other then to suggest going into the device manager itself and disabling it there instead of in the sound manager..

Now the only reason i can think of that it's tripping out is if the onboard audio device is loosing the connection sensing of the jacks or what have you... which would result in it reloading and connecting to a device that is detected, which would be your hdmi..

IT could be your front audio jacks that are messing this up too... make sure in the bios it's set to the correct mode.. as well as the connector connecting the board to the front...

I've seen a case where AC'97 connector was connected and HD audio was selected in bios that resulted in similare symptoms..

another case would be fault front audio ports... causing the chip to malfuction too...

As for your system coming out of hibernation/sleep states..... check your bios for wake up events... and how it's set to wake up...

Re: HTPC switching sound device by itself.

I'll have to check those things. Using the back jacks for 5.1 audio and the front connectors are connected to the motherboard but I've never had anything plugged in. Maybe I'll just disconnect it entirely, I don't foresee that I'll ever use it anyway.

I'm leaning towards that it's set to wake up to wake up on network access, I'll have to change that but I'll see when I have a look at it.

Re: HTPC switching sound device by itself.

Seem to have nailed both issues finally. Exactly what I did to get rid of the sound problem I don't know but it's working now...

The sudden turning itself back on from power savings mode was due to network access, I disabled the network and it stayed dormant so I went in and changed some settings in the advanced settings for power savings mode and that problem is gone.
