Firewall settings - outgoing connections
Is it at all possible to set windows firewall in Home Premium to only allow the outgoing connections I chose? As it is right now I can only set the incoming, or do I have to upgrade to Professional or higher?
Trying zonealarm but it's not working to well. |

Windows Firewall is a bog-standard pain-in-the-arse firewall that always gets disabled on any computer I use (yes, use, not just ones that I own) to make way for a third-party firewall.
There are others that you may wish to use. Personally, I'd recommend biting the bullet and pay the £20 for a year's subscription to an Internet security suite like BitDefender but if you have to go freeware then you should be able to find them without too much hassle: ZomeAlarm you've tried, Comodo Firewall PC Tools Firewall Plus Online Armour Outpost Free

Re: Firewall settings - outgoing connections
I think it is somehow possible to configure the Windows firewall to filter outgoing traffic, but you would have to create rules for each application manually, it won't ask.
If you decide to go for some third-party I would suggest Comodo firewall - set the firewall mode to Custom Policy and alert level to Very High, this way the firewall will ask for every in/out connection attempt. |

Figures. I could do that but I'm just to lazy. Gonna have a look at that firewall instead since zonealarm makes my system lock up now and then and also makes my connection sluggish. I know it's zonealarm because I had none of those issues before I installed it, they appeared right after.

Re: Firewall settings - outgoing connections
i find it strange how a few people seem to have nothing but troubles with windows intergrated firewall.... i've personally never had a problem with it provided a peice of software doesn't show up out of the blue and modify it in a manner that results in total choas (virus)...
Cause if a virus ends up screwing with windows firewall.... yeah... then it's a nightmare. Alternative 3rd party firewall solutions have been nothing but headaches for me and numerous other people... Everytime someone seems to install something firewall related.. be it commodo.. or norton or mcafee... etc... on and on including zone alarm and such..... it's turned into nothing but a mess of garbage..... things stop working..... machine slows to a crawl.... etc... Remove it.. and ah... all better
