Sata controller mode
I have realized that I installed windows with my BIOS settings to have all drives set in IDE mode. My question is, is it worth it to figure out how to get it set to ahci mode, can't use raid because I don't have identical drives, and if it is how can I get it to still boot because the last time I tried to just change it windows locked up with the starting logo

Re: Sata controller mode
The practical difference is typically unnoticeable, but with an AHCI mode storage driver installed it should work. Try the latest motherboard drivers from Asus for that motherboard for instance. http://support.asus.com/download/dow...=map&f_type=23 PRO/USB3&type=map&f_type=23 I see that under the Utilities section they have a separate AHCI storage driver package, that should cover it. Hope the link works, Asus's pages are a bit unusual...
Edit: no it didn't, try copy-paste this text line instead: Code:

Re: Sata controller mode
Do tell if it helps and if there's any significant difference. I've never noticed any myself.

Re: Sata controller mode
in IDE mode.. command quereing and other advanced features of the SATA controllers both SATA1/2/3 generations are made inert... meaning they are disabled.
you'll get a nice boost.. specially with SATA 2 by enabled ACHI mode... or Raid mode... Most noticeably on Intel ICHx/R controllers.. The perpose of the IDE mode is like a failsafe mode.... most suiteable for those that are using ide drive with sata adapters..... or older drives that don't work truely as sata....or very well as sata some of the orginal boards wouldn't allow booting from a sata drive if set to ACHI mode... but could be booted if showing up as an IDE

Re: Sata controller mode
I haven't particularily noticed anything but I think I had pretty good transfer speeds before. I might notice it more with having faster drives in the first place, and as you can see from my specs I am running all AMD. The weird part is that the last time I looked at my BIOS after I changed it to ahci nothing is listed under the storage section in the opening screen though it is when I look at boot devices. What is a good way to test the transfer speed of the drives in real life

Re: Sata controller mode
rl testing is kinda hard to do without having an identical drive to transfer too and from... hdtach... several other benchmarks are out there but aren't exactly 100% true to life..
As for them not showing up inthe bios under storage.. that's normal, the ACHI/raid controller is responcible for that
