Windows 7 SP1 USB driver bug

The Windows 7 SP1 USB Driver Bug (what it is and how to fix it))

It appears that, under some conditions (some users report updated versions, others don't, a possible key may be the presence of a USB3 controller), the active copy of the USB drivers are not updated to SP1.

If the drivers were hotfix (KB976972 for Nvidia chipset controllers), and you attempt a post SP1 cleanup, driver signing will be lost, and the USB2 controllers will fall back to USB1.

In most other cases, the drivers will just be outdated.

If the controllers are deleted and redetect, they update, but all connected devices will be treated as new devices, so any software configuration for them will be lost.

The other suggestion in the thread, is a method for forcing the files to be updated.

Re: Windows 7 SP1 USB driver bug

There are a limited set of conditions where it will actually break something.
Quote:
For most people, this bug just means that they keep using the old 7600.16385 version of usbport.sys, usbehci.sys, and winusb.sys instead of the newer 7601.17514 version. So, for most people, it's not a very big deal.

However, there is a scenario where this would result in your USB2 (EHCI) controller becoming unsigned, which may result in all your USB2 devices being downgraded to USB1.1. This particular scenario happens when (1) you have KB976972 installed (this hotfix was distributed via Windows Update to anyone with a NVIDIA USB controller, such as people with nForce boards or first-generation ION) and (2) you ran the DISM cleanup command ("DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /spsuperseded") after installing SP1.
In the remainder, the drivers will simply remain at the pre-SP1 version.

Actually, around the net, SP1, despite having been through both official and unofficial test releases, seems to be causing some issues with application performance and with SP1 update failing.

Could there be an SP1A in the not too distant future?

Re: Windows 7 SP1 USB driver bug

i've had 3 conditions where SP1 has failed to install.. and all of them have been prebuilt system.... this isn't uncommon considering the massive fail rate of massive updates like this having ALWAYS been failing since windows xp days..... and more commonly since Vista's first SP1...

Custom built machines... no problemo..... prebuilts.. always a bitch
