Sidebar/ autorun ???

In my Advanced System Information/Startup Programs I have two "sidebar" items listed. These don't show up in any other Start Up listings e.g. CCleaner, or others. But, I don't have any Sidebar/Gadgets activated and, for some reason, I can't seem to get these two items removed from this list.

It's not a huge deal other than just a nagging bit of information that I'd like to put to rest. It's my understanding that Windows 7 doesn't use Sidebars and I'm puzzled as to why these are even listed due to that?

Sidebar %programfiles%\windows sidebar\sidebar.exe /autorun NT AUTHORITY\LOCAL SERVICE Startup
Sidebar %programfiles%\windows sidebar\sidebar.exe /autorun NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE Startup

Re: Sidebar/ autorun ???

Have a look with Autoruns to see if it lists them. Autoruns have been able to identify and toggle anything autostarting that I've seen.

Re: Sidebar/ autorun ???

Windows 7's "Gadgets" run on Sidebar, Dyre. So no worries there as it's a legit line.

As to why you can't remove those listings, try running whatever program you are using to delete/disable them as an administrator (right-click "run as administrator). In my case I don't run any Sidebar gadgets either, and none show up in the startup list anywhere. If, however, I run Spybot S&D as an admin, and check the Advanced | Tools | System Startup list I have 2 listings for the Sidebar specifically tied to each user. Mind you, I don't think that you can delete the Sidebar listing as it's considered (and I don't know why) a critical item... or some such s**t. You can, however, alter the startup line so that it doesn't startup. Just alter the path to something like "autorrun.exe" or change the sub command to something like /autowun. Either change will make the command fail, and it won't start.

Re: Sidebar/ autorun ???

@mkk: I had already come across that Autoruns app and actually did some checking with it. So far, though, no dice on getting the lines changed.

@Tipstaff: Thanks for the additional info. I'm quite sure the entries are harmless. But, not knowing for sure just WHAT it is they are doing there and whether they are actually starting anything is the bugger for me. If I could see some manifestation of what it is they're doing, I could forget about it.

Re: Sidebar/ autorun ???

I have these startup items in registry too, but there is no "windows sidebar" folder in program files so I'm quite sure they don't do anything.

Re: Sidebar/ autorun ???

these don't show up for me in the msconfig/regedit under all the current user and local system run entries be it 64bit line or the wow 32bit capability registry lines..

In the System information under Software ~> Startup programs, i've only got the Microsoft security essential listed... even though i have a few other things in the startup that aren't.... such as powerdvd 11 stuff and my USB3.0 capability driver.

As mentioned it won`t show up there under normal checking, and especially not with MSConfig under any circumstance.

UAC, btw, also affects what you see. In my case running SS&D I get 12 listings, but I`m running with UAC turned off. Turn UAC on and SS&D shows 9 until I run it with admin privileges.

Re: Sidebar/ autorun ???

The way this came to my attention to begin with was doing something I don't recall doing much at all: If you bring up the AMD CCC, go to Information, Software. Then click on the System Information button. It's this one that shows the items I mentioned.

Since these autoruns don't show up in any of the processes in Task Manager, I'm assuming they don't actually run unless there's a Gadget active.
