Windows Updates breaks Internet Access - Internet Server Needs Driver
My son's PC went through the updates and now he can not access Internet via any browser. Per his warning, I got all the updates EXCEPT the security update for IE9. After rebooting, I'm still able to use my browser.
So, question is, how can he fix his problem? He has tried removing/updating the driver via Device Manager; Tried Removing that device via DM and rebooting...Windows cannot locate a driver....; Tried removing the Update; Tried rolling back to a previous state of Windows prior to the updates. Internet Properties shows he has Internet Access...which he does, via Skype. But not through any browser at all. He also did a system file check, it found one corrupted file and supposedly fixed that. But, still no Internet access via a browser. Kind of at a loss without doing a full OS installation....which is NOT appealing to him at all. |

No fix but thanks for the heads up on the updates... They haven't come through here yet.

I've about 30 machines that have updated.... none of them are exhibiting a problem...
i don't know what to suggest at the moment.

Re: Windows Updates breaks Internet Access - Internet Server Needs Driver
that sounds like a bit of malware, or a DNS issue to me. Few tidbits of info here, sounds semi-relevant.
after windows 7 update installed 39 updates no browser can access the - Microsoft Answers i just update last hour and haven't noticed anything strange. |

Re: Windows Updates breaks Internet Access - Internet Server Needs Driver
I, too, did all the updates except for the one for IE9 initially. After being away from home, I came back and went ahead and got that one, too. No problem on my system at all....so far.
My hunch is that, for whatever reason, Windows Update on his system installed a driver for a different device. I've had that happen in the past when I let Windows do an update for my audio drivers. Man, was that a mess! And, the problem is that, once Windows decides which device you have, it's a pain getting things sorted out again. I now no longer let Updates do any device driver updates. If it tells me I have one, I go to the manufacturer's website to get it. Anyway, still sorting out the problem on my son's rig. EDIT: He said he finally got things sorted out by going to a Restore Point from 2 weeks ago. That seems really messed up to me. But, at least he's back online now.

Re: Windows Updates breaks Internet Access - Internet Server Needs Driver
How new is the system? Does it have USB3, and is it done via a 3rd party chip such as the Renesas/NEC chip? As soon as I updated that driver via Windows Update my network card stopped work as apparently it's all tied into the same channels/lanes that the USB3 chip is on. As soon as I put back the old driver everything worked again.
'Course, I couldn't get on the net AT ALL, so it's not exactly the same case, but close enough to warrant a closer look. Also, I had an interesting case today. For some reason (and I can't figure out which update is doing this), but I had a client that ran all the updates yesterday, and for some reason Norton Internet Security took a nose dive. The only way to get it back up and running was to uninstall Norton. Put Norton back in, and everything was fine (or at least it has been for the last day or so). |

No, there's no USB 3.0 on that system. But, I still think it may have had something to do with an attempt to install the wrong NIC driver on it. Since I never actually got to get on that system to check things out, I'll likely never know for sure. But, that was my hunch and the direction I was trying to lead him to check.
