158.18 killed my vista - HELP!

For the past few months I have successfully been running my BFG 8800GTS on the 100.65 nvidia drivers from the beta section of the nvidia website.

Yesterday I noticed nvidia released the 158.18 drivers, so I figured I would give them a shot.
I followed the installation instructions to the letter, letting the setup uninstall my previous drivers, restart, then attempt to install my new drivers.
Only at the end of the installation I get the message "This system has not been modified." and the whole restart your computer stuff.
So I figure thats a bit odd, but you know, why not try again.
Same message keeps occurring.

So bugger it, I try to install the 100.65 nvidia drivers I was previously using successfully. And what do I get? The same bloody message about the system not being modified.

So I get pissed and purchase Driver Cleaner.net figuring maybe the drivers weren't fully removed. I run Driver Cleaner.net in safe mode, it cleans everything, I try install the 100.65, same thing, no dice on the install. I try the 158.18 - again no dice.

So I figure a manual inf install might give her a go.
I go into Device Manager, right click "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)" - Update Driver Software - point her to the 100.65 drivers and I get a bloody message saying "This operation requires an interactive window station" (see attached image).

GAR!

Where the hell do I go from here?!

I just want some kind of video driver, something that will let me run a game or two.

Cheers for the help guys,

Æwalker

A side note: Windows Update will also fail if I try to install the video driver through it.

Just a thought, did you run the driver executable as an adminstrator?

Yes.

Problem proved unsolvable.

Formatted and fresh install fixed everything.

Cheers.
