physx installation failed??
HI,
Never had this before. Removed my gtx 260 last night to install a 6970 AMD. uninstalled all nvidia, rebooted, safe mode, driverclean and sweeped, shutdown. put in 6970. Decided not to want the 6970 (noise issues, wont go into that), uninstalled, removed card. cleaned as before. put back the gtx 260 and when I install the WHQL 260.99 it all installed fine, except at the end it says Nvidia Physx Failed. Rebooted and the control panel does have a panel for physx and i can change the values. Checked c/programs(86)/nvidia and there's no physx folder any longer. Downloaded the standalone latest physx package and tried installing it and it just says newest version is already installed no need to install. Any subsequent uninstall/driverclean/reinstall of drivers end the same. any ideas as to what I can do? or is physx actually installed? afaik i've had 260.99 installed prior to installing the 6970 and it's always had installed fine and had an entry in "add and remove programs", not there anymore though. |

What does this do?

Re: physx installation failed??
It might be detecting the presence of an AMD driver on your system. I'd contact Nvidia about this personally, but someone here might offer better assistance.

Re: physx installation failed??
I checked my system and PhysX wasn't under Program Files(x86)\Nvidia, it was under Program Files(x86)\AGEIA so check there (it was a surprise for me as well, I thought they would have changed that). The best way to make sure PhysX is really there is to try a game or a tech demo that requires it. If it works, leave it at that for the time being, installing a newer driver, when it comes out, will probably sort things out.

Re: physx installation failed??
physx won't detect an amd driver and not install... physx is a computational add-on the is REQUIRED by hundreds of games..... it's just that with amd.... it doesn't use hardware gpu acceleration and with nvidia it does....
i'm betting it failed to install due to already being installed...

Re: physx installation failed??
but how can it be already installed when (since I remember) physx was always in the panel of programs I can uninstall?
I can't find any Physx folder or Ageia folder anywhere. Don't forget I've reinstalled these Nvidia drivers with driver sweep/cleaner selecting physx and nvidia drivers on every occasion. I'll try and find something that will only run with physx installed... |

Re: physx installation failed??
UT3 requires physx to be installed.... i know personally if you remove it.... UT3 has a fit when trying to load...
even the demo.. that's about the only one i'm fully aware of.. but check your nvidia control panel.... it should be in there.. i think the latest version was removed from the normal installation place and moved directly into the nvidia control panel.

Re: physx installation failed??
okay, jus did a few things. but something seems to have fixed it.
Uninstalled the drivers, safemode cleaned. rebooted. Removed the ATI External Service (was on the list but not running) - likely not related. Installed Physx older standalone 0513 i recall. reboot. install 260.99 click clean install driver and physx. it uninstalled physx 0513 and installed 0514 fine. install did not fail. all physx files are now in C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\PhysX However, going into the service.system drivers I see a 3 drivers that are named after AMD or Advanced Micro Devices. AMDSATA AMDXATA AMDSBS I assume these should be there? just looking into my registry and searching "AMD" yeilds allot of results also. I did driver clean/sweep amd though many times. |

Re: physx installation failed??
I tried
Set Devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 both AMD 6970s were still on the list under display. uninstalled them. (This was before the above stuff, tried installing nvidia drivers rigth after reboot and still failed on physx). |

Re: physx installation failed??
Might be easier to use a restore point, if you have a viable one.

Re: physx installation failed??
I've always had to manually generate restore points. Do it once a month / right before any big hardware changes to the compy.
Glad to see it's working again. I know Just Cause 2 can also have issues w/o PhysX using an NV card, but it looks like you've got it
