Hello,

I think I solved my tdr problems. I used CPU-z to see what memory timings I had since I was using dual channel and I had to RMA a chip. The RMA chip had different timings from the original. I had to go into the bios and set the timings manually to the slowest settings and I haven't got a tdr since.

Same here, Same here..
Or atleast: when I am using the second DVI port.
The S-video port seems to work just fine.

What memory (brand + productnr) are you using?

I am using the Apida dual channel DDR2 800 ram. I'll have to look at who made it when I get home.

One is lists the manufacter as Team Group.INC and the other doesn't list anything. It's also the one with the slowest timings.

Just had another episode after moving from one monitor to the next. I think it is important to note again that I had _no_ problems with Multiple Monitors and Vista 32 bit using an X700 (PCIe) and X1550 (PCI) cards on another system. Only after moving to Vista 64 bit and using the 3870 HD card did this start to happen.

Just a follow on from the post a week ago on the previous page, pg. 26. I RMA'd the Asus P5E WS Professional and got an Asus Maximus Formula. Same video card, same driver, same Vista, no "driver stopped responding and has recovered" errors in 4 days. For me at least, the problem is gone. I did change from Ballistix PC1085 to Mushkin PC1085, so I'll never know which of the two might have been causing this, if either, but for me it sure seemed a hardware issue.

I like this Maximus Formula a lot better, too!! Best MB I've ever built on!

Perhaps it's my motherboard too. Gonna test the vga cards in my gf:s computer tonight and if I get no errors there I am in for a possible RMA on the mobo also.

OK, i am trying to find a reason for this problem seeing ATi can't be bothered to.
Does anyone have an HD2900XT by Sapphire? (512MB)

If so, can you please tell me your Bios Date and Bios Part Number?
Mine:
Bios Part Number: 113-B00602-100
Bios Date: 2007 / 04 / 16

It is a Hardware problem

Okay, here's me eating my words.

I swore up and down that this was a vista related issue, mainly because i am dual-booting vista 64 and XP and I never had the problem in XP... until a couple days ago. So I ran memtest and no errros I assumed my ram was good, swapped both video cards into my other machine, they worked great, bought new power supply Antec 650, still had ATIKMDAG. Then i bit the bullit and bought new ram only to rule it out so I could come online and tell all the people who have being saying its hardware to stuff it. Well whatya know turned out to be ram after all.

It appears that vista is way more intolerant of hardware than XP, ya I've heard that time and time again but this was crazy I was able to play tons of games on XP for months, Crysis, GRAW, Gears of War, Stalker with no issues then when i boot vista sometime it would crash on desktop, maybe its the way vista addresses ram that really brought this out.

I am not saying it is solely a ram issue but i am saying that i am now convinced it is a hardware issue.

I have run memtest for 24 hours with zero issues in my 8GBs.

Latest test - I just removed my 1550 card and will run the single HD3870 with two displays for a bit to see if I can create the problem (which I have been getting 1-2 times a day..). Will post results, if I still get the issue I plan to install an X700 card and the 1550 again with 3 displays.

Installed my HIS HD3850 in my GF:s computer and it ran just fine and dandy. She is running vista too allthough 32 bit and a totally different hardware. I think you may be on to something there about the way Vista adresses memory. I have also run memtest without any sign of issues om my machine. Perhaps it's time to run a memory test inside windows if possible to see if it buckles under load. Any tip on software that can do that inside vista with all drivers loaded in memory?

<sigh> I thought I was doing well with 36 hours of stable running behind me, including lots of 4 Prime95 sessions running without a hitch. Then I came back to the system and found the dreaded "stopped responding and recovered' message in the system tray, and a completely frozen Vista OS.

Next test is to go with the X700 and X1550 instead of the HD 3780...

No errors in RAM as far as I can see here. Gonna RMA the MB today and asked to exchange it for an Asus Maximus Formula. Hope they will. Can't see anything else that should cause my problems than the motherboard.

Ok, its not an HDMI problem in my case.
I attached a monitor to the port and... well it took 6 hours and then boom. Atikmdag stopped responding.

So frustrating..

O.. And replacing your PSU doesn't work either.

Ive had this problem for a while (using ATI x1600), however, recently I found a solution to my problem. I underclocked my card just a little and havent had any problems since. If anyone else wants to try that to see if it works for them, let us know.

Hi everybody! I just signed up to DH as a result of this issue.

As the story goes, I built a new system a few weeks ago with hardware specifications as follows:

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 3870
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 motherboard
Intel Q6600 CPU
4x2GB 800MHz OCZ DDR2 memory
580W Hiper Type R PSU
750GB WD Caviar SE16 HDD
Windows Vista Ultimate x64

Synthetic Tests Run

This system is using nothing but new parts, except for the PSU which was in another build and ran perfectly. All parts check out perfectly in synthetic stress tests. Memory produces no errors running Memtest86+ on Test 5 for hours on end, CPU is perfect on OCCT stress tests at fully stock voltages all the way up to at least 2.92GHz (let alone the stock 2.4GHz I run it at!) and the board seems otherwise completely stable in every way.

From what I've seen, there is no way this issue is not an ATI one. Experience tells me that all the other hardware checking out and having only errors with this one specific driver means that the card or drivers are at fault. In the past 2+ weeks I have not seen even the slightest slip-up from my system under any level of load coming from other parts or any stability issues in the least other than this driver recovering once or twice a day.

The Problem

The only issue I have ever had with this system since new was this graphics card problem. So far, I have noticed that as long as games which are very stressful are being run on this machine, it runs like a dream. I have yet to see one driver issue while running newer graphics-intensive games except when I alt-tab out of them or sometimes when I go to the game menus. While the card is running heavy loads consistently, it is perfectly fine as far as I have seen in the past two and a half weeks. I have also found that I'll see Windows recover the graphics driver very often (in the order of once every ten minutes) when running older games which I have limited by VSync such as UT2004. The GPU usually is forced to recover exiting a game, or scrolling through documents. I have yet to see any issues when I was just idling. My machine often runs overnight and often longer with no use and it has been fine.

So overall, all I have taken note of thus far which is really interesting is that under changing loads, it will consistently crash and under either very high load or no load, it will run perfectly. This is not all that surprising if it were an issue with changing GPU voltages as you are very prone to getting really weird waveforms on DC current when FETs increase output current. I have a gut feeling that my problem at least is something to do with ATI's PowerPlay. As such, I'm going to see what I can do to disable it or do something of the sort.

What I've Tried so Far

Overall, I haven't played with the card that much yet. I have tried plugging an extra molex onto my mainboard which is normally used for powering high-power cards in Crossfire or SLI which may tax the mainboard quite a bit. Of course, no change here. I also reinstalled Vista after my first install on this system assuming that there was something that had gone amiss with that to no effect. The drivers I have used from the start have been the Catalyst 8.1 drivers. I am currently on the Catalyst 8.2 Beta drivers due out in a week or so and they have not helped at all either.

My next move is to work on PowerPlay to see if I can uncover anything. I may just start by underclocking the card to various levels first since that is an easy place to start. I'm not going to waste my time submitting a support ticket to ATI until I have tried a few more things and gathered a bit more data. They will probably send me an automated response first, then a real person will link me to the KB page on the AMD/ATI site and then they'll get bored of me and finally send an RMA form...

Something to Note

I have noticed that there are a lot of people here who have posted similar issues, including a few Nvidia users. I'd just like to point out that we are not all necessarily receiving this error for the same reasons. Some people may have had system components at fault, but in some cases that I've seen here, there have been really strange symptoms that don't really fit any working theories I have seen or can concoct. I get the impression that the mentality of thinking all the issues fall under the same blanket may hold us back from finding a solution. Some food for thought!

In conclusion, I understand what you guys are going through and this is a really annoying problem. Hopefully I'm on the right track here, or somebody else can figure out what is going on because I'm sure I'm not alone here when I say that I want to get this issue resolved once and for all. Best of luck to everyone and I'll definitely be posting back as this problem evolves!

I want a system like yours

Thank you very much. It is so good to see a calm, well thought out and detailed description of the problems you are experiencing. Rather than a "me too" rant.

I think the powerplay experiments will prove interesting as there are already a few brave souls who are reflashing their bios, (with positive results) to essentially disable the throttling that occurs on the GPU. Certainly a state change on the GPU will likely occur when you alt tab out or go to a game menu and possibly also when exiting a game because the load on the GPU is reduced at these times.

BTW, your impression is 100% accurate. And I agree. We have one vague recovery message form Vista and there are many different sources and causes that lead to the recovery and message. Essentially we had/have the same scenario in XP when the system crashes and all you get to see is a message about the driver being stuck in an infinite loop. Vista just catches the unresponsive driver after a short timeout and simply restarts the driver. In XP you could not reload the driver dynamically.

But I can't complain too much as I suppose any message and recovery is better than a system that just stops dead without any clues whatsoever. But both scenarios are 100%
frustrating until they are fixed.

In any case there is already much investigation going on with regard to the throttling on the graphics cards. I will check and see what , if any, progress is being made or conclusions are being drawn.

Thanks again.

Steve

Greetings Corey,

I think you are my clone - - at least with the bit about joining because of this issue and most of your components match mine (peek back a few pages for my detailed post and troubleshooting efforts thus far).

One question - are you running two monitors on the 3870 card?

Regards,

Chris

OH here is a good one for you all. I have had a ticket open with ati for months on this and this is what I found today under the ticket status "abandoned" WTF talk about saying up yours eh? I reopened it and not going to take it, that seeing that I can not have the money to replace my 1900xtx

also the part Corey posted I have done here short of a new mobo (cost for me) also ATI have replaced my card twice. I was staying calm but with this I am started to get pissed off seeing that I was dumped like that 8-). also I have tried everything listed here and in my case I say it is a driver problem but will not give up.

Dude, we feel your pain. However, we are not seeing TDRs using 3D or Video on an X1900 or any other product for that matter. Nor are the majority of X1900 users.

Given that we don't encounter the issues, we don't believe there is a problem in the driver. (That is not to say you are wrong, but simply we can't reproduce a problem.)

I have looked at the posts you have made and do not see a lot of details.

I have been getting the "atikmdag error" for over 2 months and still not working here with 7.10

System specs
AMD64 3200+ 939pin running at 2GHz
2048GB ram in Duel Channel (4 sticks of 512)(just put in the other GB last week)
ATI 1900XTX PCIE

good idea about the psu. I checked and I have a Enermax 485W EG495P-VE SFMA Noisetaker II Power Supply and according to this site ( eXtreme Power Supply Calculator Lite v2.5 ) I only need a 305W PSU. so Im thinking in my case its a software problem.

3================================================= =====================================
well I'm still getting the problem here and still no idea why. I have even done a full reinstall with still no fix. and its very annoying it will happen once then not again for at least 24hrs or more

4================================================= =====================================
Well I am still getting this error after a reload of vista and with both of my video cards.
1900xtx and my 1600xt. only happens with either a 3d game or videos.

5================================================= =====================================
Well I am still having this problem and have a ticked reopend with ati.
They did send me this and I did every thing short of a new mobo. (dont have the money for that), also not sure if anyone posted it, I did not see it but here it is. Hope it helps some of you out.

here is the link

well I am still getting this error and I have done a reload new memory new card(replaced by ATI) new psu and ran stuff and still getting this error. ATI can not reproduce this error according to them and it is very annoying. any ideas? I have

Please flesh out the system HW details, SW details, and let us know which 3D apps you are running and what video is impacted by the problem. Please pick the software that is most likely to suffer from the issue.

A DX diag or system info report goes a long way to collecting this information.

Based on your config and description I would have been suspicious of the PSU. But you indicate you have replaced the PSU and it did not help. Please elborate. Did you get a 600 W (or more) brand name. Or just do a temporary test? With what and what happened? Better? Worse? No change?

Anyway, like I said, we feel your pain and know that the TDR problems are very frustrating. But what can we do when we can't repro the issue and have also replaced the card 2 times. Apparently with no change.

No problem. Ok I have done a full reload of Vista.
I have gone into the msconfig and turned everything off and re booted and start a game. I did not have anything running other than sound and network icon on my task bar. I even turned off my antivirus (network unplugged hehe). no change.
Power supple is a enermax 420W EG425P-VE Noisetaker Power Supply, had a 300W Antec before. no change.

my system specs are AMD 3200+ 939 pin cpu, 2gb of ram (512 x4) in duel channel, 2 HDDs - 1 Maxtor 40gb and 1 Segate 200gb, 1 LG DVDRW, 1 ATI 1900xtx.

SW well not much Vista and in the background that runs also is ATICCC and NOD32 and with games the N52 software, Xfire and some times Skype. (no change if it is on or off)

3D apps are Games for example COD2, COD4 TimeShift, World in Conflict, Need for Speed Carbon, HL2 all give me the atikmdag error. Also watching any video will do it using Media Centre or media player or VideoReDo Suite. I did put a nvidia 7900GS in and played timeshift for 2hrs and never had a problem here.

I have all the latest drivers installed from VIA for my board for vista and using the latest biso which is 1010.

Thankyou. That information helps quite a bit.

Both the CPU and the GPU will certainly be consuming the most power at the times you are experiencing the TDRs. (3D and VIDEO playback)

I don't really know where the 7900 fits in the picture as far as power consumption, but I suspect it is not so power hungry as the 1900. However, the size of the fan sink is a reasonable clue.

My initial impression from how you have described the problem and also the specific system details is that you may still have an underpowered PSU. From personal experience I can say that abbundant stable power is more important in Vista than it is in XP. (All other things being equal) In fact, I have burned down a couple of PSUs that were adequate for XP but in Vista, they casued no end of grief prior to their death.

BTW: the original 300W seems completely insufficient.

For your config I would say something around 480 - 500w is minimum. (Sorry I know this is a bit of a black art, but it is based on some experience. Also, my advice is free, so ask around and get a second opinion)

I strongly suggest you consider testing a good brand PSU around 500 W with at least 18A on the 12V rails. You could possibly also consider reducing the 12V load and testing by removing a hard disk and the DVD burner plus anything else using the 12V and simple to take out of the picture. Also consider underclocking where possible as this will reduce the power needs as well and it is a cheap test.

To quote review on your CPU from this site.
http://www.hardwareheaven.com/reviews/3200/
"They require a very strong and constant 12v rail and a powerful high quality PSU is recommended (in the region of 400w or better), dont cut corners in this department you will regret it."

And I know the X1900 is also quite power hungry and requires good stable power.

After rambling on, I want to say one more time that I understand how frustrating the TDR scenario can be. A PC must be rock stable or it very quickly becomes a royal pain in the neck and elsewhere.
