Any chance you can try the trick of reducing the load and the clocks to see if it has any affect on the frequency of the TDR? Anyway, now I don't have anything to pick on. Perhaps you can pick the TDR event that is most common, or from the most popular game or video and give me the best set of steps to replicate the problem. (If nothing stands out then pick your favorite, I just want some more specifics) Thanks |

I just registered because i'm having this same issue but with a twist. I got the error while not gaming. In fact I haven't played any PC games since installing Vista. It happened randomly while browsing the net. There wasn't anything pushing the computer at all. I've been running XP Pro since building this rig 6 weeks ago. I just installed Vista Ultimate (32 bit) yesterday and got this error an hour ago. My specs are: Abit IP35-E Mobo; Ati HD 2600XT 256MB GDDR3 (Diamond); 2048MB Wintec DDR2 800 RAM; Logisys PS550ABK ATX12V 550watt PSU While running XP I did however play WoW, BF2142, CoD4, and Oblivion and never got this error. Any help would be appreciated. I'll post if it happens again.

NOW i am confused. The DH auto email notiying me of the above post shows,
"Yes the 300w was to small I do not use it anymore hehe you missed what one I have installed it is the enermax 420W EG425P-VE Noisetaker Power Supply, are you saying that this one might be to small still? thanks." Quote:
Experience says the 485W should be adequate but is still the minimum adequate supply. I also know that marginal power will manifest in strange problems. For example something as simple as the system simply stopping dead at any time. Again I have experienced this where a relible system started to hang roughly once a week (In XP). Not too inconvienient, but observable and certainly a change from the previous 4 months. There were no errors or other clues I could find. Uping the PSU resolved the problem. BTW: I too understand the concept of "$$$ to troubleshoot" So I start with the easy and cheapest things to eliminate the problem. First was replacing the RAM sticks because I had them........NO CHANGE. Next was the PSU becasue the original was a cheapa$$ 350w and highly suspect from the beginning. Quote:

In anycase I will check into TimeShift and see if we are aware of any problems. |

Of course other things also fail, including graphics cards, but the symptoms are generally easier to link to the source. 9You know, display corruption in a geometric pattern usually points to display memory problems. Really bad problems if you see the corruption before the drivers load. :-) The important thing to remember is to be suspicious , be thorough and never eliminate any suspects until the problem is cured. TOO MANY people assume that it is a driver problem because it worked fine in XP. However, this is an assumption , and understandably so, but an incorrect assumption none the less. It may be a good idea to keep some notes that indicate when problems occur and any steps you take and the observable results, to resolve the problem. The note may come in handy if you are quizzing a freind and he asks any questions. Or your local PC expert. |

BTW: my system is using X1900 PCIE in Vista 32. Of course I am using a newer driver, but it will be available for you to try in the very near future. But I doubt that the new driver will change the problems you face. Also note that the only report we have against Timeshift is in Vista 64 and that does not cause a TDR either. |

Would like to report that I downgraded from Catalyst 8.4 drivers to 7.12 and haven't had any problems at all. I tested it out by playing some UT3 and not one issue arose.

1. Sorry for my english
2.Just registered to tell you about my experience. THIS IS DEFINITIVELY a Driver ISSUE OK ? please stop to tell that it s something else. Since i m a perfectionnist I ve tested that this way : Motherbards : i865PE , i975X , 2xIntel P35 chipsets (Asus / Gybabytes) Processors : Intel C2D E6400 , E6660 , Q6600 , intel P4 820D Memory : 2XGskillz 1 Go , 2xCorsair 1 Go , 2 x No Name 1 Go , 2xNoName 512Mo Graphics Cards : Ati 2900XT , Ati 2600Xt , Ati 3850 PSU : 350 no Name , 450 no name , Enermax 465w , Seasonic 700w Hdd : Raptor 76go 10k/trs , Ibm 750 Go 7200 trs Drivers : from 7.6 -> 8.1 I ve tested ALL THIS HARDWARE THAT WAS RETAIL mixed in every way possible with Fresh windows vista OR windows XP installation EACH TIME ( probably 20/30 install) and i ve all got the same Shit everytime always , with gaming mode , no gaming mode , Fan Speed fixed or not fixed , Temperature monitored all the time. So i got Atidmkg error on Vista and BSOD on xp , each time i ve switched with a NVIDIA 8800 GTX no more problems with installation. This shit driving me crazy and i am pretty sure that s DUAL SCREEN related cause i was in dualview mode each time it s the same things was common each time . I m waiting for a new fan that recover everything on card not only memory or chipset cause i m thinking about something about ramdac compound that reach high temps or something like that. I m running (dualview) 1680x1050 22"Flat screen iiyama + LG 17" flat too if people can tell if someone got the shit when they re not in dualscreen and other they have Atikdmag if they re in dualscreen ( computer + tv too). So thank you ! and good luck (standing on my 8800 GTX which doing so bad in Final fantasy Xi but at least doesnt screw up so randomly:/). |

It is always possible that in your case you have run into a driver bug. (We do have bugs you know :-) However, until you submit complete details using our feed back we will not be able to reproduce the problem you describe. (Your quote above is not enough information). 1) I am running Vista using 2 DVI connected displays. In fact I was running the Timeshift 3D testing yesterday in this configuration. In 6 months I have not experienced a single TDR event. 2) I see dual display systems around the office using DVI and HDMI and they all work fine as well. No TDRs! 3) I also know that in most cases where a TDR is fixed it has been HARDWARE that was the root of the problem. BTW: The messages; Display Driver nvlddmkm stopped responding, has successfully recovered or Display Driver atikmdag stopped responding, has successfully recovered are simply Vistas way of saying, "I don't know what happened but I restarted the driver to recover." If you google either of those messages you will discover that NV has plenty of these complaints as well. So I must ask how the ATI driver causes the NV problems? So please send in a problem report and assist the group in understanding the problem. |

I hope you did not spend a lot of money on the opinion. I am saying the drivers are fine, so WHO do you believe? Unfortunately, we can't look at your system nor can we duplicate the problem you describe. So there is not much else we can do. Please let us know when you can get the problem to occur in a reliable way so we can then at least determine at what point in the code the problem actually happens. |

It was more than I wanted but I had to get it checked out seeing I'm frustrated. I understand you there but what is pointing me to them is that a nvidia card runs fine in my system setup but my 1600xt and my 1900xtx does not. and I will try and watch very closely for you to see in the next few days. |

I am afraid that we can't do that.
I don't know why it works , but I will say that there are enough architectural differences between the two products that the system is being stressed in a different manner. Perhaps the weakest card (performance wise) puts more load on the CPU and less on memory. Perhaps the better card stresses memory and lightens the CPU load. Perhaps one card consumes more power or causes power spikes. If nothing else please keep an open mind about the source of the problem. If you decide it is the driver and it turns out to be something else, you will never know, because you are waiting for us to fix the driver. I would suggest you take a break from the issue and simply use the NV card for now. And during the vacation take a look at the threads about NV owners who also get the message regarding the NV driver. You will see many other frustrated users and a bunch of people who replaced bad memory or a weak PSU and resolved there problem. Good luck. |

I to hope that all people who are frustrated by the TDR can come to a solution to their problem. I will add that we have been able to resolve some scenarios that caused a TDR. In these cases the TDR was repeatable on demand and not occuring randomly. I am guessing that NV has done the same. Why? Because these kind of problems are not good for anyone. Not the user! Not the graphics card vendor! Not Microsoft! We would love to wave a magic wand and cure all the probkems people encounter, but , as in this case, there is no obvious source for the fault in the system. Good luck in your search. And thankyou for your cooperation. |

Another voice in the throng... Vista 32-bit Enterprise, ATI graphics, atikmdag causing daily crashes.
Sometimes it crashes and recovers, more commonly it crashes repeatedly, about 4 times, then the system restarts. Has been doing this for quite some time now, during regular business use, with Windows kindly saying it's the graphics driver that's caused the problem. However, in the last week or so I've been getting a BSOD pointing specifically to ATIKMDAG, before the system dies and restarts. I have a Toshiba P200 laptop which is standard except for having 2GB RAM, it features an ATI Radeon Mobility HD2400. It's driving the 1440x900 lappie screen and a second connected 1280x1024 LCD screen in an extended desktop. Software in use when it crashed varies but includes desktop publishing apps and officey stuff like Excel. Is never during gaming, nothing fun is installed. ATI Driver Packaging Version: 8.432-071101a-057262C-Toshiba BIOS Version: 010.054.000.001 HyperMemory Size: 895MB Core Clock: 440MHz Memory Clock: 400MHz Motherboard BIOS: 2.20 Hope some of this is useful to you folks at ATI so you can restore my faith in your products, the next card at home will be nv otherwise – pah, as if an individual card sale matters. Anyway, if further info would be of use please pipe up. Any help appreciated; I'd rather not have to send this laptop back as it would interrupt my work to the tune of 2 days or more installing apps and setting stuff up again. Cheers, D. |

Multiple monitors you say. I run two flat panels at work using Vista and have for 9 months now. Tried many drivers and NEVER had a TDR! So, perhaps you can fill in a little more detail on the specifics of the problem you are having, as should everyone else, and we can dig a little deeper into the multiple display problem. BTW, I have been aware of this complaint for some time. But like most TDRs there has never been enough details to allow us to duplicate the problem. Complaints are useless to me. Good details are what we need. [EDIT] JUST found this. Antec 900 case Mainboard : Gigabyte P35-DS4 All bios settings on SAFE - no overclocking. Chipset : Intel P31/P35 Processor : Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2400 MHz Physical Memory : 8192 MB (4 x 2048 DDR2-SDRAM ) Video Cards : ATI Technologies Inc ATI Radeon HD 3870 (Gigabyte version with Zalman cooler) VisionTek Radeon X1550 Series Catalyst 7.12 Hard Disk : SATA (150 GB) DVD-Rom Drive : ASUS DRW-2014L1T ATA Device Monitor Type : ACER AL1916 - 19 inches Monitor Type : Acer AL1912 - 19 inches Monitor Type : Samsung SyncMaster - 22 inches Network Card : Realtek Semiconductor RTL8168/8111 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC Operating System : Windows (TM) Vista Ultimate Professional 6.00.6000 64 bit DirectX : Version 10.00 Windows Performance Index : 5.5 Doing nothing more than internet browsing and Office apps - getting the stopped responding error and usually full lockup requiring a hard restart. OUCH. Desktop is Extended across all three monitors. Have another system (HP factory) which had Vista 32 bit and the X1550 in it (paired with X700 and same three monitors) with NO issues like this for six plus months. Problems started once the multiple monitors were introduced. I had no issues doing basic setup with single display. So I apologize for being short. Please keep it coming. Does the TDR occur with only 2 displays and 1 graphics card? Or must all three be installed? Last edited by CATALYSTCATCHER; Feb 18, 2008 at 10:50 PM. |

First Post I have a newly build system that is experiencing these same issues, but with no gaming being performed. Specs are: Antec 900 case Mainboard : Gigabyte P35-DS4 All bios settings on SAFE - no overclocking. Chipset : Intel P31/P35 Processor : Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2400 MHz Physical Memory : 8192 MB (4 x 2048 DDR2-SDRAM ) Video Cards : ATI Technologies Inc ATI Radeon HD 3870 (Gigabyte version with Zalman cooler) VisionTek Radeon X1550 Series Catalyst 7.12 Hard Disk : SATA (150 GB) DVD-Rom Drive : ASUS DRW-2014L1T ATA Device Monitor Type : ACER AL1916 - 19 inches Monitor Type : Acer AL1912 - 19 inches Monitor Type : Samsung SyncMaster - 22 inches Network Card : Realtek Semiconductor RTL8168/8111 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC Operating System : Windows (TM) Vista Ultimate Professional 6.00.6000 64 bit DirectX : Version 10.00 Windows Performance Index : 5.5 Doing nothing more than internet browsing and Office apps - getting the stopped responding error and usually full lockup requiring a hard restart. Problems started once the multiple monitors were introduced. I had no issues doing basic setup with single display. 2nd Post Just had another episode after moving from one monitor to the next. I think it is important to note again that I had _no_ problems with Multiple Monitors and Vista 32 bit using an X700 (PCIe) and X1550 (PCI) cards on another system. Only after moving to Vista 64 bit and using the 3870 HD card did this start to happen. I have run memtest for 24 hours with zero issues in my 8GBs. Latest test - I just removed my 1550 card and will run the single HD3870 with two displays for a bit to see if I can create the problem (which I have been getting 1-2 times a day..). Will post results, if I still get the issue I plan to install an X700 card and the 1550 again with 3 displays. 3rd Post <sigh> I thought I was doing well with 36 hours of stable running behind me, including lots of 4 Prime95 sessions running without a hitch. Then I came back to the system and found the dreaded "stopped responding and recovered' message in the system tray, and a completely frozen Vista OS. |

Have you tried with less system memory installed? e.g. 3 displays with 4 gig, and 3 display s with 2 gig. BTW: Reducing system memory is by no means a solution just a way to attempt to narrow down the source of the problem. |

I have not. Thanks to lots of Kona coffee, I swapped my motherboard overnight and added another new 3870 card. So I am now X38 Chipset and two identical cards. I am up and running with Crossfire disabled so I can use 3 displays. |

Hello
I joined just now in order to (hopefully) provide some more information on this very serious error. I use my machine mostly for work, but I like to game on it frequently as well. I was getting the looping TDR error which always resulted in my machine locking up. I've been following this thread (and many others) hoping for some resolution to the problem. The good news is that I think I might be close to figuring out what's making my particular crash stop. I hope this might be helpful to someone. I have been keeping a (somewhat) detailed log on this problem and steps I have taken to try to narrow it down. I've completely ruled out hardware. The reason I say this is because once it starts giving me the multiple error messages, I can CTRL ALT DELETE and stop the crash. I can even log into a different user, and use the machine normally for as long as I want. However, once I log back into the account that experienced the error, it resumes crashing as if nothing had happened. First though, SPECS: 4GB DDR2 800MHz OCZ Gold series RAM (tested thoroughly in Memtest) Q6600 Core2 Quad CPU (not overclocked) ASUS Maximus Formula MB 512 MB Sapphire ATI 3850 Audigy2 Platinum EX Soundcard (had for a while) I'm running 2 monitors in extended mode. 1 is using DVI (Dell 2405 FPW), while the other is using an adapter (older CRT: Viewsonic PF815). At one point, it was crashing at least once a day, NEVER while I was gaming, and I wasn't always AT the computer. I tried disabling screensavers, disabling each running app in the systray, etc. I've been at this for a month. I had stopped the error completely for several days by DISABLING Aero. I got sick of not having Aero though, and turned it back on. I started running monitoring software - Rivatuner (again, no overclocking of the card has been done), just so I could get an idea of what was happening during the crash. I got the machine to crash again, and this time had my camera ready to take some pics. Here's what I got. Notice that there are two spikes in the GPU Core clock that exactly correspond to the ATIKDMAG errors. ![]() The hardware acceleration also jumps at this point. Here are a couple closeups: ![]() ![]() On the windows side of things, I noticed that DWM (Desktop Windows Manager?) had one of my procs pinned: ![]() Then I tried a few things with the catalyst control center, and got the error to stop. Here's the last few entries of the log I was keeping. Note that at least once, I was able to trigger the error on my own (I think). I haven't been able to do this again though... ------------------ 11:22 AM 08/02/2008: Crashed while away again. Maybe will try disabling Aero for a while. 11:10 PM 11/02/2008: Aero still disabled. No crash since. Kinda sucks, because I like the look of Aero. 2:52 AM 14/02/2008: Enabled Aero again a couple days ago. Got the machine to crash by right- clicking/closing ATI CCC. I restarted the runtime, and right away got the error and lockup. Rivatuner meters were up, and showed a sharp spike in the Core clock. Also, the hardware acceleration meter went all the way up at the same time. I took a bunch of pictures with the camera of what was going on. After this, I tried unlocking the "Overdrive" function, and running Auto Tune. I stopped Autotune, then tried to set the clock back to default (possibly very slightly underclocking it), and haven't had a problem. I've left Vista on for 2 days with no screen blank to try to get it to crash again, but it hasn't. 10:48 AM 19/02/2008: Happy birthday. Got a crash. Same as before, was playing Solitaire. Unfortunately, I didn't have any monitoring software running so I have no info about crash like I did before. I logged into the other user account for a while, did some surfing, then logged back into main account only to have the crash resume where it left off. ----------- So to wrap this up, I have been running the machine non-stop for about a week, Aero on, everything normal, with no crash, after only enabling the CCC Overdrive feature, then trying to set clocks back to normal. All this really seems to point to a driver bug of some sort. I hadn't tried Catalyst 8.2 yet, because I had thought the problem was gone
