7.3 drivers think 7.2 is the latest version
Hi,
I just downloaded and tried to install the english Catalyst 7.3 Vista 32-bit drivers on my laptop that has a Radeon Mobility X1600 card and runs Vista 32-bit Business english. On first try it said I allready had the latest version and wouldn't install. Then I tried uninstalling with the 7.3 drivers and was able to uninstall the 7.2 drivers I had working. Then, when I tried to reinstall the 7.3 drivers it told me I had the latest version although I don't have any drivers installed. ![]() Has anyone had this issue and have solved it? Thanks for any help...

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but Terry stated in another thread that Catalyst 7.3 no longer works with every laptop manufacturer, whereas 7.1 and 7.2 did. Something to do with the specific laptop manufacturers opting in.
If you really wanna use 7.3 you need to use the ModTool - http://www.hardwareheaven.com/modtool/

Well that probably is the issue, I wish they'd inform about that on the site somewhere...
I have an Acer laptop and they wheren't supported before, so probably still an issue. Man, Acer is SO slow in updating their drivers, I wish they'd get their act together and support ATIs drivers... Btw, does Modtool support Vista? I can't find anything about it on their site...

Heh, Acer is the specific manufacturer listed in the other thread..
I have no idea about Vista support, I've never used the ModTool myself.

We're working on getting a disclaimer posted on the site. In the meantime, to save confusion, we had to switch the mobility drivers from pointing to Catalyst 7.3 to 7.2. It is correct in that the laptop manufacturers need to "opt in" to Catalyst drivers for their products. As of the Catalyst 7.3 release, none of them had opted in. Cat 7.1 and 7.2 still provide mobility support.

No OEM drivers come out monthly and if they do they are months old. I hope this isn't the case, since when the mobile dx 10 parts come and no drivers monthly, not going to be looking good to buy a ATi mobile part if we have to rely on our slow OEM to provide us with anywhere decent drivers period. |

I can't believe a manufacturer as large as Dell still hasn't opted into this program. Does it cost them lots of money? or do they have to do all the work validating each monthly Catalyst release? Last edited by Stephen M. Smit; Mar 31, 2007 at 10:24 AM. Reason: misspelling |

Yeah, I just got an Acer laptop with a Blu-Ray drive and I want to use it to watch movies on my HDTV. The latest drivers will be essential...

Wow, just wow. After reading rhyinem's response I have to wonder who ATI makes their hardware for, because it sure ain't the consumers. Talk about getting shafted.

Well he did exagerate but he does have a valid point. You certainly feel like you get left out when you buy a brand new (expensive) laptop and can't even get the latest version of the official drivers installed.
Sure the number one company to blame is the laptop manufacturer. But surely ATI has some little say in all this. I still don't fully understand why a compnay like Acer doesn't allow for the Catalyst drivers. They almost NEVER release any dirvers on their own, and when they do, they are just the Catalyst drivers but unlocked so they can be installed, nothing added at all. Is it really an issue of testing? Do they feel they can do better testing then ATI/Microsoft? Right now their latest version for Vista is the Vista Beta 2 drivers... Why not have a policy that yes, you may install the official Catalyst drivers, but we only provide support for the drivers on our website. That is totally fair, and still, the only people that will upgrade their drivers from ATI are the power users that know what they are doing, and they are smart enough not to turn to the abyssmal support line of the manufacturer.
