7.4 - Problems still :(

Hi all. My first post here

I recently (a few days ago) built a computer and am running (or at least trying to it seems) vista home premium 64 bit, with a saphire 512mb x1950 pro.

First, I downloaded the 7.3 drivers and had the infamous bsod at boot problem. Disabled event viewer and have had trouble free general usage. But gaming..oh dear.

I only have installed Supreme Commander and Starship Troopers the game (To make sure it wasn't just supreme commander being buggy)

Basically on 7.3 (and on 7.4 catalyst it seems) during play the game will just crash, the screen might go blank-ish (it'll get stuck partially rendering something) and the sound might loop. The whole machine goes unresponsive, and it's only displayed the BSOD once (mentioning irql_not_less_or_equal and portcl.sys)

I can sometimes get like 45 mins play out of Supreme Commander before it happens. I think it's random. I've checked everything I can think of for conflicts, swapping the pci sound card round to make sure it's not an irq conflict etc.

I'd just like to check that other people are experiencing the same issue (it sounds like lots of people are, though they're different kinds of crashes) - It's only the second comp I've built in 10 years so there's an element of "did I break something or is it just the drivers..."

Also, seems some people recommend using old (7.1 or 7.0) rather than the latest drivers. Where would you guys recommend getting these from, and are they stable (or at least more stable than what i'm using now?!) and supported by vista 64bit?

Thanks for any help!
