1650pro BSOD with catalyst 7.5 - 7.9

I recently installed a radeon 1650pro gfx card with Vista 32bit.

Unfortunately; trying to use catalyst drivers 7.5 - 7.9 I get the following problem:

1. Once installed the screen becomes corrupt for a few seconds just as it would usually boot into vista (just before the vista orb appears).

2. I get a BSOD which starts reading: "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage"
It also tells me to check to make sure new hardware and software is correctly installed, and finishes with information along the lines of:
*** STOP: 0x00000116 ???
*** atikmdag.sys

The PC then restarts and prompts me to go into safe mode.

But if I start windows normally this continues indefinitely until I enter in safe mode and remove the drivers in device manager.

In the meantime I have re-installed 7.4 (7.1 - 7.4 are fine), but am keen for a way of having the most up-to-date drivers.

The bios, chipset, et al are bang up to date. RAM is fine, PCIE frequency is set to auto, The power supply spec is perfectly adequate.

I have uninstalled completely each time (with ati's official uninstaller); used guru's drive sweeper, then re-installed drivers.

I really appreciate your help guys. Also please note that this issue is not related to the 7.3 hotfix issue: the only other place I have seen the 0x00000116 error discussed in this forum.
