All,

I have a VisionTek HD 2600 PRO 512MB (PCIe) with Vista x64 Home Premium.
I can put the card in and install the latest Catalyst 7.11 drivers for it.
After I do, the system slows down by about 95%.
The mouse moves (mostly), but responds to clicks after about 20 seconds.

If I run the Windows Experience Index, it makes it to the place where it renders 3D objects and then I get a message about the atikdag driver not responding, but then recovering. The process hangs then.

I tried replacing the card with a new one, but I get the same effect.
I tried replacing the card with an NVIDIA 6200 TurboCache and it works fine.
I have used the Radeon board on XP and it worked just fine on the same machine.

Machine specs:
AMD Athalon 64 4600+ (dual-core)
3 Gigs of RAM
SiS 761GX North / SiS 965L South Brigdes
American Megatrends BIOS (flashed with latest version)
PCCHIPS AM2 A33G Mobo

(I have a soundblaster audigy and a d-link DFE-530TX network adapter in the mix too)

I've been swapping trouble tickets with ATI and VisionTek for a week and a half, but I think the user community at large is probably a lot more knowledgeable about this!

Just to try since you seem to be outa ideas..

Try yanking everything else outa the machine.... just run the cpu/motherboard/ram/videocard/hardrive/optical drive.....

Install vista x64 fresh and then install your chipset drivers, then update windows to the fullest, after which download the latest 64bit ati drivers and install them..... see what happens after that...

Hopefully it's not a glitch in the way the motherboard is running the card..

I've only seen 2 instances myself where a specific type of video card with a specific motherboard has causes weird issues either similare to that or worse (no boot at all even).... 1 case however was resolved by the motherboard manufacturer with a bios update..... It happens

But give that whirl, that way your eliminating anything else that could be possibly interfearing with the card..

ALSO try and make sure you use FAILSAFE settings in the bios or try Optimal settings in the bios....

I solved the problem.

Not in the way I was hoping for, but it worked.
The retailer was kind enough to exchange my ATI card for an NVIDIA card and that one works without any problems whatsoever.
