Need some help with ATI HD 3850
Hi! I'm sorry if this is in the wrong area, please move it if so!
For the last few days I have been trying to update my driver for ATI 3850. Everytime I uninstall it with control panel, use the drivercleaner pro (filters used: ATI, ATI CCC, ATI Install Manager, ATI WDM, ATI Uninstall Utility) and then install the new drivers it tells me INF file not found. I noticed when I use the drivercleaner pro, this causes the INF file not to be found.. so everytime I have to do a system restore. Could someone point me in the right direction to do a complete new install for my graphics card? I would like to just delete the display driver, catalyst control center, chipset and anything else I need to..for a fresh install. These are the drivers/ccc I was trying to install: AMD GAME Drivers & Tools Where can I get the chipset if I don't use AMD, does that matter? Computer specs: CPU: Intel Pentium III/Pentium III Xeon (0.25 micron process) with external L2 cache (3166 MHz) Memory: 3053 MB OS Version: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32Bit Service Pack 1 (Build 6001) Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 3850 Thank you so much! |

First, quit using Driver Cleaner.
I've never used it, and I've seen too many people have problems after using it. You can just install the new CATS on top of the old ones. It's been that way for some time now. The new CATs uninstall the old ones during the install process. Now, IF you are updating from the 8.1s, you will have to go into ADD/REMOVE Programs an uninstall CCC, as for some reason you will get a message saying that you are trying to install an OLDER version, even if you are trying to install the 8.8's I think that there is a bad 'date' coded in the 8.1 CCC somewhere.Up until the time that CATALYSTMAKER posted that you don't need to uninstall anything to install the new drivers, my stabdard procedure was to uninsatall CCC, and then install the new version. I had been doing that since the very earliest CATS, when I was using a 9500 Pro. It's always worked, and I've NEVER had issues with a bad driver install.

And for the record the DC Pro is no longer supported so it can't clean new drivers. Is your card AGP or PCI-E?

Just for the record, I haven't uninstalled ATI drivers in nearly a year now. I just run the new installation and be done with it. Since the last three drivers releases, I don't even have to reboot after updating them.

My card is PCI-E, I think I need to do a fresh install of the drivers/chipset.. when I install the newer versions, nothing happens, it says it installs but I know it doesn't change anything. And I can't access CCC after installing new ones on top of my old ones (8.5 is my old driver)
Do you recommend a program that will clean up the registries etc? Thanks |

I'll run this, how can I completely uninstall my drivers? and should I uninstall the chipset? When I use the add/remove programs it leaves them in there, so it doesn't 100% uninstall everything.
If I should uninstall the chipset, which one should I use for the new install? |

If I felt that things were in disarray on my own system, I'd run a Repair installation of Windows. That will put the system back to its native state with only the native Windows drivers. Then, once the repair is done, begin to install the motherboard chipset drivers, your video card drivers, etc. Then, be sure to get the Windows Updates for the system. This can usually be done within a hour or two...including downloads of the Updates if you have a broadband connection. One other way would be to do the uninstall of the drivers from within Safemode. OR, simply run the installation of the latest video drivers from within Safemode. The installation is made to overwrite the older files. If you DO get a prompt warning that you are overwriting NEWER files, go ahead and let the drivers do that. This should straighten out any odd/corrupted drivers that got put in place either by mistake or via some nasty 3rd party stuff. Good luck! |

Thanks, I finally was able to get somewhere! I had to have windows install the drivers and not use the ati installation, as I was still getting the INF file not found error. Although I believe I have a bigger problem that caused all of this, I noticed I can't turn AA on high anymore in CCC and the fan doesn't kick in when I have my settings really high on games, so I think my fan stopped.. looks like I'll have to get a replacement, is there a tool that can check that it really stopped?

Thank you, I don't see the fan settings for the graphics card, just the cpu fan. Also is there documentation for this? I don't really know what everything does. The site doesn't have a help area...

Right click on the icon to get started using it. ![]() ![]() ![]() Likely, the best place to get help is from Ray himself. http://forums.guru3d.com/forumdisplay.php?f=52 But, he does frequently login here at DH, too. If you have specific questions, feel free to ask. Many of DH members are familiar with this tool.
